UCSB Claims Both Male Weekly Honors, UCIís Amber Steen Earns Second Consecutive Female Honor

With the inclement weather at the Ben Brown Invitational last week, UC Santa Barbara's Chris Ashley and Gabe Mann were still able to produce stellar performances to earn Big West Male Track and Field Athletes of the Week, for the week ending March 13. On the women's side, UC Irvine's Amber Steen grabbed her second consecutive Big West Female Track Athlete of the Week honors. There was no female field athlete of the week honored this week.

Ashley (San Mateo, Calif.) finished the 5,000 meters in third place overall, first NCAA Division I finisher, with a time of 14:25.45. The sophomore distance runner, crossing the finish line 11 seconds faster than his previous personal best, currently leads the Big West in the event.

In his third meet of the year, Mann (Santa Barbara, Calif.) threw the javelin for a distance of 200 feet, 11 inches. The previous week he hit an NCAA Regional mark at the All-Cal Cup with a 204-10 throw.

Posting back-to-back female track athlete of the week honors, Steen (Newport Beach, Calif.) won the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.96 at the Ben Brown Invitational. Her top time of the meet was an automatic qualifier for the Big West Championship and was only three seconds shy of the regional qualifying mark. Last week she received the weekly honor for her performance in the 1,500 meters.
