Long Beach State Sweeps Big West Baseball Player/Pitcher Of The Week Awards
Long Beach State posts the first sweep of the year with Big West Player and Pitcher of the Week awards with Evan Longoria and Andrew Carpenter receiving such honors. This is the second time this season that a 49er has received player of the week honors, while Carpenter earns the first pitcher of the week honor for LBSU.
In the 49ers' game against No. 5 Rice at the Coca-Cola Classic Tournament in Houston, Texas, the right-handed junior pitched 7.0 innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run in Long Beach State's 4-1 victory. Carpenter also set a career-high in strikeouts with eight, en route to a 1.29 ERA. In his last two starts, the Vacaville, Calif., native has given up just two runs.
In four games last week, including two games against nationally-ranked teams, Longoria went 7-for-13 for a .538 batting average. He recorded his third home run of the season in LBSU's first game of the Coca-Cola Classic Tournament against Lamar. He also drove in three runs during the tournament, helping the 49ers go 2-for-3 with wins over Lamar and No. 5 Rice. The junior third baseman had six walks on the week to help with his .686 on-base percentage.
