Big West Conference Baseball Release - Week 3
Top 25-Filled Schedule: A trio of schools open the month of March battling a Top 25 opponent. No. 25 Cal State Fullerton hosts 7th-ranked Stanford in a three-game series. This marks the third nationally-ranked team the Titans have faced this year, having shut out then-ranked No. 17 TCU and falling to No. 1 Vanderbilt. Long Beach State, looking for its first win of the 2019 season, visits No. 10 Mississippi in a weekend series, while CSUN hosts No. 17 Michigan. Prior to the showdown with the Wolverines, the Matadors host third-ranked UCLA in a midweek contest. This marks the first ranked opponents of the season for CSUN, while the Dirtbags opened the year at No. 3 Florida.
Against The Rest: CSUN and Hawai’i are tied for 21st in base on balls...UC Riverside has turned 8 double plays to rank 18th...The Aggies have blasted 18 doubles to sit 19th...UCSB is fourth in the nation in hit by pitch after 21 batters have gotten clipped...CSUN’s hot bats have produced 83 hits to rank 16th and 13 home runs to sit fifth...UC Davis has stolen 18 bases (12th)...UCSB is 20th (2.66) in walks allowed per nine innings and 14th (4.11) in strikeout-to-walk ratio...UCD’s Logan Denholm, Hawai’i’s Adam Fogel and UC Irvine’s Brandon Lewis are tied for 24th after notching four doubles...Lewis is also seventh in home runs after belting four...CP’s Bradlee Beesley sits seventh with 15 hits and is followed by Brandon Bohning in 16th with 14 hits...CP’s Jarred Zill has tallied 20 strikeouts to sit ninth.
Gauchos On The Run: Following a 10-5 victory over Hartford last Friday to kick off the series, UC Santa Barbara scored at least seven runs in each of its first five contests, marking the first UCSB baseball team to do so since 1990. In all, the Gauchos have scored 65 runs this season to place them 15th in the nation, which is an average of 9.3 runs per game to rank 22nd.
Zill’s Impressive Performance On The Mound: In the opening game of the California-Cal Poly series, fifth-year senior right-hander Jarred Zill struck out 13 batters over five innings. Zill allowed just two earned runs and five hits. His 13 strikeouts are the most by a Cal Poly pitcher since Matt Imhof twice struck out 14 batters in a pair of 2014 contests.
CSF, UCSB Showcase Top 40 Recruiting Class: Cal State Fullerton’s incoming 2018 recruiting class has been ranked as the 13th-best in the nation according to D1 Baseball. Fullerton’s recruiting class was ranked 16th in the country by Baseball America and 33rd according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. UC Santa Barbara was also recognized by Collegiate Baseball with a ranking of 39th.
A New Era Begins At UC Irvine: Ben Orloff, former Anteater shortstop and Big West Player of the Year, begins his head coaching career in 2019 as the ninth head coach in program history taking over for Mike Gillespie who led the program to 393 of his 1,156 career wins. He is assisted by former UCI teammate, Daniel Bibona, who enters his seventh year as the Anteaters’ pitching coach and J.T. Bloodworth, who joins the staff this year after spending six seasons at UC San Diego.
Big West’s 50/35: The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s. Did You Know - Over the years the Big West Conference has been known for its stellar pitching, but no one has been able to top Cal State Fullerton’s Curt Lewis, who tossed a 1.17 earned run average in 1976.
