CSF, UCI Enter Week Two Ranked In The Top 25

Big West Baseball Release - Week 2

On The Docket:
After going 2-1 at the MLB Collegiate Tournament last weekend, which included a win over No. 17 TCU, No. 17 Cal State Fullerton heads to San Diego for its second straight tournament, the Tony Gwynn Classic, where the Titans are set to face Missouri State, Fresno State and Oklahoma.  UC Irvine, who maintained its 25th ranking after posting a 2-1 mark over Washington host San Diego State in a midweek contest before visiting Rice for a weekend series. Cal Poly and UC Davis both take on Pac-12 schools for their weekend series with the Mustangs hosting California and UC Davis visiting Arizona State. Long Beach State, Hawai’i and UC Santa Barbara are home this weekend,  while UC Riverside sets its sights on its first road trip of teh young season with a visit to San Jose State.

Against The Rest:
After the first weekend of play, UC Irvine is tied for 26th in the nation with a 2.00 ERA. The Anteaters’ 11.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio and 1.00 walks allowed per nine innings places them second..UC Santa Barbara is one of seven schools that maintained a perfect fielding percentage opening weekend...CSUN continued where it left off last year with its hot bats as it belted 42 hits to rank 12th in the country. The Matadors’ five home runs places them 19th...CSUN’s Brandon Bohning tallied eight hits to rank 12th in the nation and two home runs to tie for 12th...UCI’s Taylor Rashi is one of 15 players to record two saves over the weekend to top the charts.

CSF, UCSB Showcase Top 40 Recruiting Class:
Cal State Fullerton’s incoming 2018 recruiting class has been ranked as the 13th best in the nation according to D1 Baseball. Fullerton’s recruiting class was ranked 16th in the country by Baseball America and 33rd according to Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.   UC Santa Barbara was also recognized by Collegiate Baseball with a ranking of 39th.

Preseason Honors:
UC Irvine’s Andre Pallante began the season garnering preseason All-America First Team honors along with being  named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes preseason watch list.  Hawai’i’s Dylan Thomas, who collected second team preseason All-America honors was named to the preseason Stopper of the Year watch list.

A New Era Begins At UC Irvine:
Ben Orloff, former Anteater shortstop and Big West Player of the Year, begins his head coaching career in 2019 as the ninth head coach in program history taking over for Mike Gillespie who led the program to 393 of his 1,156 career wins. For the program, it’s the 41st season of Anteater baseball, 33rd in Division I, and 18th since the program returned in 2002. He is assisted by former UCI teammate, Daniel Bibona, who enters his seventh year as the Anteaters’ pitching coach and J.T. Bloodworth, who joins the staff this year after spending six seasons at UC San Diego.

Big West’s 50/35:
The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s.  Did You Know - The Big West Conference sponsored baseball from 1970-76 before the teams competed in the NCBA and SCBA from 1977-84.  In 1985 the league reinstated baseball and has continued to  carry the sport to the present day.
