AVCA Showcase Highlights Men's Volleyball Schedule

2019 Men's Volleyball Release No. 6

Sporting a 30 match home court winning streak, Long Beach State returns to the Walter Pyramid for this weekend's AVCA Showcase, which features UC Santa Barbara, Ohio State and Penn State.

The Week That Was
The Big West finished an outstanding 13-2 in non-conference action last week, winning 13 consecutive matches after an 0-2 start.

Long Beach State (10-0) and Hawai‘i (5-0) remained undefeated, and the six conference members have now compiled a combined record of 46-16. That includes a winning record against every other conference.  Records against each conference are as follows:

MPSF (21-10)
EIVA (10-1)
MIVA (11-5)
Conference Carolinas (2-0)
Non-Division I (2-0)

Twenty-two of the 46 wins have come against teams ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association top 15 at the time of the contest.

First Big West Match On Tap
The quest for the Big West regular season title begins on Friday with a single match as No. 3 UC Irvine travels to UC San Diego. The match will be available on ESPN3. The Anteaters take a five-match winning streak down to La Jolla to face a Tritons squad that is finishing up a six-match homestand. UCSD has won three of its last four contests  as Triton head coach Kevin Ring is just two wins away from 100 for his career.

Gauchos Continue To Roll
UC Santa Barbara has played a gauntlet of ranked opponents. The Gauchos have battled 11 consecutive AVCA top 15 foes and emerged 8-3 against them. The only non-ranked opponent on UCSB’s schedule was Harvard in the season opener. UCSB is riding a six-match winning streak that includes casualties such as No. 14 Ball State, No. 13 Purdue Fort Wayne, No. 9 Lewis and No. 5 Loyola-Chicago. And for good measure, UCSB registered back-to-back sweeps at home last weekend versus No. 3 BYU.

Hawai‘i Shows No Rust Following Layoff

Hawai‘i returned to action after a 19 day hiatus and showed no ill effectss from the break, posting two straight commanding wins over No. 8 Stanford. The Rainbow Warriors swept the Cardinal on both nights and moved to 5-0 on the season, and have yet to drop a set. UH ventures off the island for the first time this season, heading to Charlotte, N.C. for a pair of matches against host Quincy and a neutral contest versus Saint Francis (PA).

Long Beach State Hosts AVCA Showcase
Long Beach State held its No. 1 position in Monday’s AVCA top 15 poll release, and have had that distinction since Jan. 22, 2018, a span of 19 consecutive weeks. The Beach host the AVCA Showcase this weekend with fellow Big West member UC Santa Barbara, Penn State and Ohio State. LBSU has won 30 straight contests in the Pyramid and have not lost at home since March 26, 2016.
