ESPNU To Air UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara Battle For First Place

1/28/2019

Weekly Release No. 13

TIPOFF TIME

Showdown For First Place Coming Up
The battle for first place is set for Thursday when UC Irvine travels to UC Santa Barbara for an 8:00 p.m. tip on ESPNU. The Anteaters (5-1), riding a three-game winning streak, sit one-half game ahead of the Gauchos (4-1) in the Big West standings. Both squads have been hot – UCI winning six of its last seven games, and UCSB seven of eight.

Streaks On The Line
One of two streaks will come to an end when UCI visits UCSB’s Thunderdome for the nationally televised game.

• UCI has won eight straight road games against Big West opponents dating back to Jan. 20, 2018, when the ‘Eaters fell at UCSB. The eight straight Big West road wins is the longest in UCI’s Division I history.

• UCSB is 9-0 at home this season and has won 10 straight in the Thunderdome going back to the final home game of 2017-18. The 10 game home court winning streak is the third-longest in school history, trailing the all-time record of 15 straight in 1987-88 (5) and 1988-89 (10), and 12 in a row from 2016-17 (1) to 2017-18 (11).

Three Games Slated For ESPN3
The schedule is saturated with three ESPN3 games this week. Cal State Fullerton and CSUN is the featured game on Wednesday. The Titans have won four straight after an 0-2 start, shooting 50 percent or better in all four. The Matadors are 2-0 in Big West road games. CSUN has not won three consecutive Big West road games since the 2007-08 season. UC Riverside hosts Cal Poly and UC Davis on Thursday and Saturday respectively.

Galloway Moves Up Big West Rebounding List
Senior JONATHAN GALLOWAY moved into second at UC Irvine on the career rebounding list with 854, surpassing Will Davis II (852). Dave Baker (1971-75) is the school’s all-time leader with 926. Galloway’s 10 boards against UC Riverside on Saturday – his eighth double-digit performance this year – moved him into 13th in the Big West career book. Pacific’s Sam Willard (874, 2007-11) and Utah State’s Eric Franson (885, 1991, 1994-96) are next on the list.

Diane On Pace To Join Exclusive Club
CSUN redshirt freshman LAMINE DIANE is having an outstanding season as the Big West leader in both scoring (23.4 ppg) and rebounding (10.9 rpg). He could become just the eighth player in Big West history to lead in both categories. More impressively, he would become the first freshman to do so.
