The final non-conference appetizers take place this season for women's basketball, setting the table for conference play to commence next weekend. Saturday is an especially packed day on the upcoming schedule as six games are slated to take place, four of them in Big West home arenas.

AROUND THE BIG WEST

Big West Celebrates 50/35
The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s.  All season long, the Big West Conference will celebrate the history of all conference sports.  Join us as we pay homage to the student-athletes, coaches, staffs, communities and fans who have helped pave the way.

• CSUN senior Channon Fluker is nearing exclusive company in Big West lore. Fluker is on pace to become just the fifth player in league history to post 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. The other four players are a who’s-who in Big West history...New Mexico State’s Anita Maxwell, Hawai’i’s Judy Mosley and Cal State Fullerton’s Genia Miller.

• Fluker just tied Maxwell for the most career Big West Player of the Week honors with 13. But who was the first ever winner of the weekly honor? UC Irvine’s Natalie Crawford won the award on December 23, 1985, the first of her two career conference weekly honors. Her other weekly award was two years later almost to the date on December 21, 1987.

National Best
CSUN senior Channon Fluker is stamping her name all over the NCAA leaderboard. The center is tied for the career active lead in double-doubles (65) and ranks second in blocks (248) and tied for eighth in blocks per game (2.3). This season Fluker is the national leader in blocks per game (3.8) and blocks (49) and is tied for the lead in double-doubles (10). She also is second in total rebounds (155) and 12th in rebounds per game (11.9). Fluker is also on pace to post 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career, having already passed the rebound threshold and standing just 172 points shy of the mark.

Helping All Over
Last year the Big West only had three players average 4.0 or more assists per game, with the leader putting up 5.1 assists per outing. This season five players average at least 4.9 assists per game with two players recording 6.0 or more assists. The league lead belongs to UC Irvine junior Lauren Saiki who is handing out 6.5 dimes per game. That number is the ninth-best figure in the NCAA.

The Beach Rolling Into The New Year
Long Beach State is showing signs of righting the ship after a pair of wins following a tough start. The Beach won on the strength of their defense, allowing just 49.0 points per game over those two wins. The club had allowed 78.1 points per outing over its previous 11 contests.

The Road Well Traveled
UC Riverside should be excused for feeling relief for being at home this week, the first home game for the club after seven consecutive outings away from SRC Arena. The team went 2-5 on the extended road trip, topping Eastern Washington and Weber State. The Highlanders were competitive on the tip despite all the travel, losing four of the five games by eight points or less.

ON THE WAY TO 2K
Here’s a look where UC Davis’ Morgan Bertsch and CSUN’s Channon Fluker stand on the league’s all-time scoring list, and who they will pass, on their way to 2,000 points.
