United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region Team
The Big West Conference placed seven men’s soccer players on the All-Far West Region teams, announced by United Soccer Coaches on Wednesday.
Led by seniors ROY BOATENG of UC Davis and IVAN CANALES of UC Irvine, members of the first team, a total of four Big West schools were represented at the regional level.
Boateng earned his second career All-Far West Region honor after being named to the second team in 2017. The two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Year – only the third individual in history to repeat – Boateng helped the Aggies post a 0.80 goals against average over 20 contests and reach the finals of the Big West Tournament.
The defender is the first Aggie to earn first-team all-region accolades since Quincy Amarikwa and Dylan Curtis in 2008.
Canales becomes the first Anteater to be selected all-region first team since Cameron Iwasa in 2014. The 2018 Big West Offensive Player of the Year tied for conference-high honors in both goals (10) and points (25) while recording a league-best six game-winning goals. The midfielder concluded his UCI career with 25 goals and 20 assists – one of just seven players in Big West history to join the 20-20 club.
Boateng and Canales are the first conference representatives on the all-region first team since UC Santa Barbara’s Nick DePuy captured the honor in 2015.
UC Davis senior defender JUSTIN WRIGHT and CSUN sophomore forward DANIEL TREJO were tabbed Second Team All-Far West Region selections.
The Big West had three individuals on the third team, including senior midfielder DANIEL CRISOSTOMO of UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara teammates junior defender NOAH BILLINGSLEY and sophomore forward RODNEY MICHAEL.
Michael joins Boateng of UC Davis as a two-time all-region honoree. The Gaucho attacker earned second team honors in 2017 as the recipient of Big West Freshman of the Year plaudits.
