The 2018-19 season marks the 50th anniversary for men’s sports in the Big West Conference, and the 35th for women’s. All season long, the Big West Conference will celebrate the history of all conference-sports sports. Join us as we pay homage to the student-athletes, coaches, staffs, communities and fans who have helped pave the way.
REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONS
With eight titles, Cal State Fullerton leads the Big West with the most regular season crowns in the history of the league. Cal Poly comes in second with seven, while Long Beach State has claimed four for third-most. UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine both have three regular season titles while CSUN and former member Pacific, bring up the rear with one each.
UCI’S PERFECT CONFERENCE CAMPAIGN
In 2010, UC Irvine went 8-0-0 in league to win the Big West Conference. The Anteaters garnered 24 points, the most a team could secure while on its way to the only perfect conference campaign in the league’s history.
BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
RIVERSIDE REMAINS UNDEFEATED
With its best start since 2004 when the Highlanders opened at 9-0, UC Riverside is 6-0-1 on the year. The Highlanders haven’t dropped a regular season match since Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017 versus Long Beach State when the Beach defeated the Highlanders 3-0 at George Allen Field. UCR is the only undefeated team in the Big West. UC Riverside will host two opponents this weekend in San Jose State Friday, and UNLV, Sunday. The Big West is 1-1-1 versus SJSU this season while the league is 0-1 against UNLV so far in 2018.
IN THE POLLS
For the fourth-straight week, Long Beach State is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches national weekly poll. The Beach will be tested this weekend as it travels to No. 3 USC, Friday, for a 1 pm PT kickoff. The Big West has struggled collectively against its Pac-12 foes this year and is currently 1-7-1 versus Pac-12 opponents.
For the second-straight week, UC Santa Barbara is receiving votes in the national, Top Drawer Soccer Poll. The Gauchos hit the road for two matches this weekend beginning with Weber State Friday and Utah State Sunday morning.
RANKED OPPONENTS ON DECK
The Big West faces four top-25 teams this weekend including two top-five teams in No. 1 Stanford and No. 3 USC. The BWC seeks its first win over a ranked opponent.
LONG BEACH STATE TIES PROGRAM RECORD
Long Beach State defeated St. John's in dominating fashion with a 6-0 victory, Friday. The six goals tied a program record for the Beach for scores in a single contest. Six goals in a game is second-most in league this season.
