#LeadBig: Six Student-Athletes Named Big West Service and Leadership Award Recipients

Six student-athletes earned the inaugural Big West Conference Service and Leadership Award honoring those who best engage with other student-athletes and their communitiies.

Six student-athletes earned the inaugural Big West Conference Service and Leadership Award, which honors those who best engage with other student-athletes, and are involved with their campus community and the community surrounding their institution.

Selection of the student-athletes are based on the following criteria and at the discretion of each institution.

  • Only one male or female student-athlete recipient per year 
  • Student-Athlete must be a participant in a Big West Conference sponsored sport
  • Student-athlete must have been academically eligible on their respective team
  • Student-Athlete engages consistently in service and leadership activities that impact the campus, community, or regional levels. 
  • Student-Athlete makes the most of opportunities presented to them by taking on key roles and is innovative in seeking out meaningful service and leadership opportunities.
Congratulations to the following six individuals:

MIKAELA FRANCIS, CAL STATE FULLERTON
SOFTBALL • SENIOR • BS IN HUMAN SERVICES


• President of Student Athlete Advisory Committee (May 2015-May 2018)
• Volunteer for Titan Tales, CareerWise and annual Girls Sport Expo in hometown of Santa Rosa, Calif
• Member of school's Dean List from Spring 2013-Spring 2018 and a two-time Big West Academic All-Conference selection


ALLISON LOOMIS, UC IRVINE
WOMEN'S WATER POLO • SENIOR • BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, MINOR IN FILM & MEDIA STUDIES


• National Society of Leadership & Success Member
• High Performance Consultant/Intern for USA Water Polo, promoting the sport through various channels
• Azevedo Academy volunteer, served as assistant coach to 5-time Olympian Tony Azevedo for youth clinics ages 7-19
• Chancellor's Award of Distinction (May 2018), acknowledging seniors with GPA of 3.50 or higher and contributions to UCI community


KELECHI OHIRI, UC DAVIS
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL • JUNIOR • SOCIOLOGY/ORGANIZATIONAL STUDIES


• Member of Nigerian Student Association – AD Inclusiviity and Diversity Team
• Assisted with Athletic Director initiatives on diversity and inclusion, including programming and conversations with admin & student-athletes
• Earned Big West All-Freshman Team honors (2015) and All-Big West Honorable Mention recognition (2017)


IMANI MCDONALD, LONG BEACH STATE
WOMEN'S SOCCER • JUNIOR • COMMUNICATIONS/EVENT PLANNING MANAGEMENT MINOR


• Served as ASI Senator At-Large and member of Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
• Went on Panama community service trip (2018), volunteer on and off campus
• Named 4-time Academic All-Star (3.0 or higher GPA during a given semester)


CHLOE PHAM, UC RIVERSIDE
WOMEN'S TENNIS • SENIOR • ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE WITH CONCENTRATION IN TOXICOLOGY


• Undergraduate Researcher, Environmental Toxicology Research Lab and Board Member of Student-Athlete Advisory Council
• Involved with Community Settlement Association and Big West Coin Drive
• Named Big West All-Academic and a Team GPA Award Winner


CLARE MARIE ANDERSON, HAWAI‘I
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL • SENIOR • HONORS BIOLOGY


• Research internship/volunteer Kapiolani Women's & Children's Hospital (2015-18)
• Research internship/volunteer at UHM Cancer Research Center (2017)
• Recipient of John A. Burns School of Medicine Merit Scholarship (2018)
• One of 16 students from U.S. selected to attend Nobel Peace Institute at the University of Oslo, Norway.  A 2017 Nobel Peace Scholar honoree.
• Big West All-Academic recipient and UH Scholar-Athlete (2014-18)
