HAWAI‘I FALLS IN NCAA SEMIFINALS
#3 Hawai‘i completed its 2018 campaign with a 37-5 overall record after falling to only two teams all year in No. 1 UCLA (three times) and No. 2 Florida State (twice). The Sandbows defeated #6 South Carolina 3-0 to open NCAA action before defeating #2 Pepperdine 3-2 that same day. After advancing to the winner’s bracket , UH fell to #4 FSU 3-2 and #1 UCLA 3-2 on its final day of competition. The Sandbows’ No. 3 pair in Carly Kan and Laurel Weaver were named to the all-tournament team after a perfect 4-0 showing over the weekend. For the second-straight season, UH finished third-best in NCAA action behind national champion, UCLA, and Florida State.
After taking down Big West opposition at the conference tournament at Queen’s Beach, Hawai‘i earned its third-straight Big West Tournament title. The ’Bows defeated #5 CSU Bakersfield in a 5-0 sweep Friday to open competition then went on to take a 5-0 win over #3 Long Beach State in the winner’s bracket meeting before a 4-1 victory over the Beach to claim the crown.
CAL POLY FINISHES HISTORIC CAMPAIGN
For the first time in program history, Cal Poly finished with a record above .500 with a 27-7 mark overall. The Mustangs also received its highest ever ranking in CP history at No. 4 in the nation. The Mustangs spent the duration of the season in the top 10 (10 weeks) and cracked the top 5 for four consecutive weeks (April 2 - April 23). CP spent two weeks at No. 4. The Mustangs also defeated its highest-ranked opponent this season when they bested the Waves 3-2 in its third match on the year (Feb. 23).
BEACH COMPLETES MEMORABLE SEASON
Long Beach State completed its memorable campaign at the Big West Tournament, finishing with a 26-8 overall mark on the year. The Beach spent the duration of the seaon in the top-10 in the national poll and was ranked in the top-5 for two consecutive weeks (March 19 - 26). The Beach advanced to the championship match of the Big West Tournament for the third-straight season, but would fall to the Sandbows 4-1.
