Twenty-three Big West Conference athletes were selected on the final day of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft, increasing the league’s draftee total to 28.
Big West Conference Champion Cal State Fullerton paced the conference with seven selections. The Titans had two selected on the second day with 2018 Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year Colton Eastman drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 107th overall pick in the fourth round and fellow pitcher Andrew Quezada going to the Colorado Rockies in the seventh round (216th). Five more Cal State Fullerton players were selected on day three.
Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara each witnessed four student-athletes selected in the draft, with three Dirtbags going on day three. Leading the trio was Eli Villalobos, a right-handed pitcher selected by the Miami Marlins as the 417th overall pick in round 14. Starting pitcher Clayton Andrews and closer Chris Rivera would also be nabbed later in the day.
For the Gauchos, all four selections were taken on the final day of the draft. Pitcher Noah Davis was the first Big West player taken today as the Cincinnati Reds 11th-round pick (319th). Shortstop Clay Fisher was chosen in the following round to the Baltimore Orioles and pitcher Stevie Ledenma and infielder Andrew Martinez were picked later in the afternoon.
Cal Poly and CSUN each had three players while a trio of schools had two apiece selected - Hawai'i, UC Riverside and UC Irvine. UC Davis had one player chosen.
