Colton Eastman and Blake Workman combined to shut down one of the best offenses in the nation, as Cal State Fullerton took down Baylor 6-2, Friday afternoon at Sunken Diamond in game one of the Stanford Regional.
The win moves Fullerton (33-23) into the winners' bracket and it'll play the winner of Stanford and Wright State tomorrow at 8 pm PT. The Titans have now won four consecutive postseason games at Sunken Diamond going back to last season.
Eastman (W, 10-3) was absolutely phenomenal, as he went 7.0 innings and surrendered just one earned run and stuck out eight, while surrendering just four hits. The eight punch outs equals his postseason career high. His postseason ERA is now 2.57.
Workman was also flawless in relief, as he tossed 2.0 shut down frames, while surrendering just a single hit.
Sahid Valenzuela recorded a 2-for-4 game with an RBI, while Brett Borgogno boasted a three-hit performance, laying down two bunt singles, a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Ruben Cardenas went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a double, while Hank LoForte extended his on base streak to 40 games and his streak to 17 contests, while he's collected at least one hit in 28 of his last 29 ballgames.
Jairus Richards went 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Mitchell Berryhill also produced a knock and an RBI. Jacob Pavletich also contributed with a hit, while Chris Prescott went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Eight of nine Titan starters collected a knock and all six of Fullerton's runs were scored with two outs.
The Titans struck first and early in the regional opener. Valenzuela got things started with an infield single to shortstop. Pavletich then popped up and Prescott reached on a fielder's choice, but Fullerton came through with some clutch two-out base hitting. Richards smoked a ball to right field to put runners at the corners. Then it was the No. 9 hitter Borgogno striking a rocket to left center for a bases clearing double to bring in Prescott and Richards to put Fullerton in front 2-0.
Fullerton extended its advantage to 3-0 in the sixth, as Cardenas got things started with a one out double to left center, then an out later, Valenzuela kept the Titans' two-out magic going. Valenzuela shot a single up the middle to score Cardenas all the way from second base.
Baylor's high powered offense finally reared its head in the bottom of the sixth, as the Bears struck for two runs on two hits and an error in the frame to cut the Titan lead to just 3-2.
Fullerton put the finishing touches on the win in the ninth.
Prescott got things started with single to left center, then Jordan Hernandez followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Prescott to second. Borgogno then dropped down a bunt single to put runners at the corners.
LoForte then broke things open, as he lifted a ball to left field, but was dropped allowing Borgogno and Prescott to score to make it 5-2. Berryhill then followed with a base hit to center field to drive in LoForte, making it the final margin of victory of 6-2.
The Titans will continue their journey for the regional championship tomorrow at 8 pm PT. The game can be seen on ESPN 3 and the WatchESPN application.
