Big West Co-Leaders Produce Baseball Weekly Honorees

Cole Kreuter and Andrew Quezada helped their squads into a share of first place in the Big West with a pair of Player of the Week worthy performances.

Senior • 2B • Rancho Mirage, Calif. • Westminster Christian (FL) HS

➜ UC Irvine senior Cole Kreuter delivered several clutch hits to power his team to a 4-0 record, earning his second career Big West Baseball Field Player of the Week award.

➜ The second baseman had a triple and two home runs as he finished 5-for-14 (.357) at the plate and helped the Anteaters to their first series sweep of the season.  UCI won four straight road games – one at No. 13 UCLA and three more at CSUN.

➜ Kreuter belted a two-run homer to give UCI a 4-1 lead over the Bruins in an eventual 8-1 triumph.

➜ He had at least one hit in all three games of the CSUN series.  He had a pair of hits in Friday’s 4-2 victory.

➜ Kreuter went 1-for-3 in the final two CSUN contests, and both hits caused damage.  He tripled off the center field wall to lead off the ninth inning with UCI trailing 4-3.  A sacrifice fly scored Kreuter to tie the game at 4-4, and a home run later in the inning gave UCI its first lead, 5-4 – which ended up being the final score.

➜ To complete the sweep, Kreuter notched his second grand slam of the season to punctuate a six-run eighth inning for an 8-4 victory.

➜ For the week, Kreuter scored three runs and had a team-leading seven RBIs.  He had a .929 slugging percentage.  He also contributed to a double play in each game as well.

Others nominated: Elijah Skipps (Cal Poly); Hank LoForte (Cal State Fullerton); Anthony Lepre (UC Riverside); Dustin Demeter (Hawai‘i)

Junior • RHP • Bellflower, Calif. • Cypress College

➜ Cal State Fullerton junior Andrew Quezada tossed his first career complete game shutout to earn Big West Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors.

➜ The right-hander scattered 11 hits while walking none and striking out a career-high nine in going the distance in Sunday’s 8-0 victory over Hawai‘i.  The win enabled the Titans to finish the week tied for first place in the Big West standings with UC Irvine.  UH came into the series atop the conference but lost two of three to the Titans.

➜ Quezada wiggled out of trouble several times against the Rainbow Warrior offense.  UH had at least one hit in six of the nine frames, including multiple hits in the first, third, seventh and eighth.

➜ Quezada induced the ‘Bows into FIVE double plays.  With runners at the corners in the third, he got Johnny Weeks to ground into his second consecutive double play.  In the seventh, UH had runners on first and second with two outs but Quezada forced another twin killing.

➜ He also struck out the side in the fifth after allowing a UH leadoff single.

Others nominated: Darren Nelson (Cal Poly); Sean Sparling (UC Irvine); Dylan Thomas (Hawai‘i)
