Fueled by four players in the top 10, top-seeded Long Beach State sits atop the leaderboard of the 2018 Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Strawberry Farms Golf Course (par 71, yardage 6,038) after blasting a team total of one-over 285.
UC Davis is 10 strokes back in second place (295) and is followed by Cal State Fullerton with a total of 299. Host UC Irvine and defending champion Cal Poly are knotted in fourth with a first round score of 300. UC Riverside carded 304 to secure the sixth slot and is followed by CSUN (306) and Hawai’i (308).
Long Beach State’s Jennifer Yu was the lone player to fire under par with a one-under 70 to pace the 40-person field. Teammate’s Haley Tygret and Cara Baker found themselves log-jammed in second place with UC Davis’ Christine Danielsson and Madison Wood at even-par 71. There is also a three-way tie for sixth place between Cal Poly Carolina Cantlay, UC Irvine’s Janet Yeo and CSUN's Michelle Duan, who each shot one-over 72.
Round two of the three-day event tees off at 8:30 a.m. with CSUN and Hawai’i. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com and admission to the event is free.
The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women’s regionals which are held at Stanford,Calif., Tallahassee, Fla., Austin, Tex., and Madison, Wisc., May 7-9. The 2018 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships will be hosted May 17-23 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
