Long Beach State senior Virginia Smith (Maple Ridge, British Columbia/Garibaldi Secondary) garnered her second career Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week honor with a huge performance in a key conference win over No. 19 CSUN.
The utility player poured in four goals to lead the Beach to a 10-8 overtime victory against the Matadors. Her most important goal was her last one. With 34 seconds left in the first overtime, Smith notched her fourth goal of the game to give LBSU a 9-7 advantage. That proved to be the game-winning goal as CSUN later narrowed its deficit to 9-8. No. 14 LBSU went on to win, 10-8, on Senior Day at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Smith also had a pair of key steals against CSUN.
Smith scored one goal to help LBSU to a 10-4 win over Brown earlier in the week.
With five goals over the two games, Smith ranks No. 3 on the team with 21 scores for the season.
