Kyle McCann was solid on an east coast road swing and Petra Melounova dominated the competition on a trip to the mainland.
McCann Helps Highlanders To 5-1 East Coast Trip
UC Riverside junior Kyle McCann (San Jose, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) collected his second career Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honor following a productive east coast roadtrip.
McCann helped the Highlanders to a 5-1 record on the trip that resulted in wins over North Carolina A&T, Methodist, Hampton, Norfolk State and North Carolina Central.
Playing between No. 2 and No. 3 singles, McCann reeled off six straight singles victories, including four in three sets. He had a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Norfolk State’s Flavian Fernandez in a 4-3 team triumph.
WIth partner Filip Engstrom at No. 2 doubles, McCann registered a 5-1 record. They eked out a 7-6 (4) win over North Carolina Central’s Gabriel Cucalon and Sebastian Bromley.

Melounova Leads Hawai‘i to Central Coast Sweep
For the third time this season, Hawai‘i sophomore Petra Melounova (Havlíckuv Brod, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Havlíckuv Brod) notched Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades.
Melounova was dominant on a Central Coast road trip in which the Rainbow Wahine defeated Cal Poly (7-0) and UC Santa Barbara (4-2). She went 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles with partner Roxanne Resma.
She recorded identical 6-1, 6-1 victories over Cal Poly’s MacKenzie Worsnop and UCSB’s Palina Dubavets. In keeping with the theme, Melounova and Resma posted identical 6-2 wins in both of their doubles matches.
