A trio of individuals were pegged Tennis Athletes of the Week, including a Hawai‘i standout who toppled the nation's No. 10-ranked singles player.
Ortlip Returns From Flu To Dominate
Cal Poly junior Josh Ortlip (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge TC) returned from a bout of the flu to win twice in a dominant nonconference triumph over Boise State, earning his third Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week award this season.
Ortlip is just the 15th individual in Big West history to earn three or more awards in one season.
After missing two matches last week with the flu, Ortlip returned to his No. 1 singles spot and promptly delivered a 6-2, 6-4 win over Boise State’s Jack Heslin. He then teamed with Axel Damiens at No. 2 doubles to defeat the BSU tandem of Stefan Lalovic and Pedro Platzeck, 6-3.

Dinkelmeyer, Melounova Impress In Road Contests
CSUN freshman Alicia Dinkelmeyer (Treuchtlingen, Bavaria, Germany/Senefelder-Schull HS)) and Hawai‘i sophomore Petra Melounova (Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Havlickuv Brod) claimed Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week accolades after continued solid play.
Dinkelmeyer went 4-0 in singles and doubles on a two-match east coast road trip in which the Matadors posted a 1-1 record. She defeated Delaware’s Amanda Studnicki, 6-2, 6-1, and George Washington’s Diana Kussainova, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Dinkelmeyer also went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles with Mari Taslagyan.
Melounova collected perhaps the most impressive singles victory of the entire 2018 season from anyone in the Big West. She dispatched the nation’s No. 10 singles player – Stanford’s Michaela Gordon – in relatively easy fashion as she won 6-2, 6-3 for UH’s only point in a 6-1 loss to the No. 26-ranked Cardinal. Melounova also earned a doubles victory with Roxanne Resma against a tandem from Illinois.
