UC Riverside, Long Beach State Recognized With Softball Weekly Honors

Jenna Curtan and Cielo Meza helped their respective teams perform well in tournament play.

JENNA CURTAN, UC RIVERSIDE – FIELD PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Senior • Outfielder • Roseville, Calif. • Woodcreek HS

UC Riverside senior Jenna Curtan (Roseville, Calif./Woodcreek HS) notched Big West Softball Field Player of the Week honors as her .588 batting average helped the Highlanders post an impressive 5-1 record.

➜ Curtan posted a team-leading 10 hits in 17 at-bats, including three doubles, as the Highlanders went 4-0 at the Highlander Classic.

➜ The outfielder ended the tournament with three straight multi-hit performances.  She went 2-for-2 for two doubles and two runs scored in a 4-1 win over Stony Brook.  She was 3-for-3 with two runs scored in a 12-3, five-inning victory against Brown.  Curtan closed the tournament 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in a five-inning, 11-0 rout of Saint Mary’s

➜ Curtan opened the week with two hits in a 2-1 victory in a non conference doubleheader split against St. John’s.

➜ Her seven runs scored led the team.  She also had two steals.

➜ With four walks added to her stat line, Curtan accumulated a .682 on-base percentage.

CIELO MEZA, LONG BEACH STATE – PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore • RHP • Fillmore, Calif. • St. Bonaventure HS

Throwing her second career no-hitter to highlight an impressive showing at the San Diego Classic, Long Beach State sophomore Cielo Meza (Fillmore, Calif./St. Bonaventure HS) collected Big West Softball Pitcher of the Week acclaim.

➜ Meza fanned 11 batters in the 1-0 win over No. 21 Minnesota.  She walked just one in the game.

➜ She opened the San Diego Classic with a complete game one-hitter to help the Beach defeat San Diego, 2-0.  She walked one and struck out five in that one.

➜ Meza also tossed 3.0 innings of shutout relief against UCF.  She did not allow a hit and struck out five.

➜ In 17.0 innings of work, Meza allowed one hit, no runs and one walk while striking out 21 and improving to 9-0 on the season.
