Big West Readies For Ranked Opponents In Tournament Play

LONG BEACH STATE OFFENSE SETS BIG WEST RECORD
Long Beach State’s dominat offensive performance over Buffalo set a new Big West and program record with 23 runs scored in a 23-1 final in five innings. The Beach surpassed the previous conference record that belonged to UH, set on February 15, 2013 after the Rainbow Wahine plated 22.
LBSU’s Taylor Rowland tied two individual program records with two home runs and seven RBI as the Beach racked up 24 hits and four home runs. The Big West record for home runs in a single contest is seven. Rowland now has three round trippers on the season. Her three home runs tie for second-best in league.
BEACH OFF TO FAST START
Long Beach State is 9-1 after the first 10 contests of the season, its best start since 1993 when the squad opened the campaign at 10-1. LBSU’s only loss was to No. 21 James Madison in a 4-6, 10-inning saga. The Beach has won five-straight, going unbeaten last weekend. Five-staight wins is the best active win-streak, shared with Hawai‘i.
MISFELDT BREAKS RIVERSIDE RECORD
UC Riverside senior pitcher Taylor Misfeldt earned her third shutout win on the year against Stanford, to break the all-time wins record at UCR with 41 to her name. The senior is now 4-2 on the season, her four wins are third-best in the Big West while her 2.15 ERA is fourth-best among league competition. The Big West record for wins stands at 107 set by Terry Capenter (FSU) from 1989-1992.
Riverisde has also shut out five opponents in nine games this season, including a pair of 10-0 wins.
With five home runs this season, CSUN senior Savannah Horvath leads the Big West and ranks sixth in the category, nationally. Horvath now has now touched them all 40 times, she tallied a career-high 13 in 2016 and 2017. The 40 homers are fifth-most in Big West history while the record for career round trippers is 53 set by Darian Tautalafua of Long Beach State from 2013-16.
BIG WEST FACES RANKED OPPONENTS
The Big West will face a slew of ranked opponents in the third week of competition as teams travel to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Amy S. Harrison Classic, the Stanford Nike Invitational and the Gaucho Classic. Long Beach State is receiving votes in the USA Today/NFCA poll and the ESPN/USA Softball Poll. Cal State Fullerton previously received votes in the national polls.
YANEZ MAKES NOISE FOR DAVIS
Yanez (5-1) went the distance for the fifth time this season and posted her second shutout of the weekend, striking out nine against only one walk in the win. The freshman has not allowed a run in her last 17.1 innings of work, and has not allowed an earned run over her last 34.2 innings pitched dating back to the season opener against South Dakota. The rookie garnered her second-straight Big West Pitcher of the Week honor and is the only recipienf ot the award this year.
