Gonzalez Leads Hawaii To Perfect 5-0 Record
Junior Irene Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain/IES Car Sant Cugat) turned in an all-around stellar performance to lead Hawai‘i to a 5-0 record, collecting Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week honors for the first time in her career.
The utility player scored 11 goals with seven assists and 12 steals as UH outscored the competition by a combined total of 60-26. The Rainbow Wahine went 4-0 as the top team at Arizona State’s Cross Conference Challenge, with all four wins coming against teams ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association top 25.
Gonzalez notched her 11 goals while shooting 42.3 percent. She was clutch in UH’s 10-9 win over host No. 5 Arizona State, as she managed two goals and three assists despite constant focus of the Sun Devil defense. Her third quarter score was the difference in the one-goal victory. Two of her assists helped freshman Elyse Lemay-Lavoie to a hat trick.
Gonzalez scored two goals in wins over No. 16 UC San Diego (7-4) and No. 21 Loyola Marymount (8-2). Her six steals also proved crucial in the win over the Tritons.
She had a goal, an assist and a steal in a 12-5 triumph over No. 20 Princeton.
Earlier in the week, UH visited Santa Clara, which was receiving votes in the CWPA poll, and came away with a 23-5 victory. Gonzalez was dominant with four goals, two assists and three steals.
In addition, she won all four of her sprints and made four field blocks during the week.
