Streaking Cal Poly Eyes First Place

Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 14

Currently tied for second at 7-2 in conference play, Cal Poly can make a run at the top spot in the Big West this week as it travels to first place UC Davis and hosts Long Beach State.

WEEKLY PRIMER (Saturday, February 10)

UC Riverside (7-17, 4-6 Big West) at UC Irvine (15-8, 7-2 Big West)
The Anteaters, who are off to their best nine-game start in the Big West in 23 years, have 11 players averaging double digit minutes. The Highlanders have eight including the 34.8 per game played by senior Lauren Holt.

Long Beach State (3-20, 1-8 Big West) at Cal Poly (13-9, 7-3 Big West)
The Mustangs' Dynn Leaupepe reached the 1,500-point mark last week, she is the leading active scorer in the Big West. The Beach will be looking to make it two in a row after beating CSUN on Wednesday.

CSUN (13-11, 6-4 Big West) at UC Davis (19-4, 9-1 Big West)
The Matadors snapped the 18-game Big West win streak of the Aggies last week. UCD is the best home team in the Big West with a 10-1 mark and have won 25 of its last 29 games at the Pavilion.

UC Santa Barbara (8-14, 5-5 Big West) at Cal State Fullerton (7-15, 2-7 Big West)
Contrasting styles collide as the Gauchos have hit 193 threes in 555 attempts, while the Titans thrive at the free throw line with 309 makes in 453 attempts.

Hawai’i head coach Laura Beeman is closing in on a career milestone. Beeman is just one win away from 100 for her career, a run that has included a Big West regular season crown and a Tournament title over her five-plus seasons. The ‘Bows have a single game this week, hosting Cal State Fullerton on Thursday.

CSUN center Channon Fluker has established herself as one of the nation’s top rebounders and now she is at the top of Matador history. The junior’s 20 rebounds against UC Davis gave her a school record 935 for her career, breaking the former record of 923 set by Denise Sutton (1982-87). Fluker is also just 35 rebounds shy of sole possession of 10th place on the all-time Big West list.

After shooting just 3-29 from three-point land and scoring just 30 points in a loss to CSUN, UC Santa Barbara used a different method to get a win over Hawai’i. The Gauchos, who are second in the league in threes made (181) and tops in attempts (524), attempted only 10 threes against the Wahine but supplemented that with 20 free throw attempts. UCSB hit half of its three-pointers and connected on 18 free throws. The 18 makes was a season high, while the 20 attempts marked the first time the team had that many since putting up 21 on December 22 against San Diego State. The club’s 10 three-point attempts were also a season-low.

Hawai’i senior guard Sarah Toeaina has been the workhouse for the squad during conference play. She leads the squad in scoring (17.4), rebounding (6.2) and minutes per game (37.6) during Big West play. She has scored in double figures in a season-best eight straight, has shot 50% or better from the floor in eight of her last 11 games and has played at least 34 minutes in 11 straight contests.

Long Beach State freshman Shanaijah Davison is in the midst of one of the best stretches of her young career. The guard is averaging 14.0 points, 4.0 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.2 steals over her last five games, with four of those games coming in a reserve role.

UC Irvine put up 100 points in its win over Long Beach State last week, the first time the program has reached triple digits since November 23, 1979 against UC Santa Cruz.

UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch, CSUN junior Channon Fluker, UC Riverside senior Michelle Curry, UC Davis’ Pele Gianotti and Hawai’i’s Sarah Toeaina became members 138-142 of the Big West 1,000-point club this season.

Several players around the league are also approaching the 1,000-point milestone. Cal Poly’s Lynn Leaupepe (963), UC Davis’ Rachel Nagel (960), CSUN’s Tessa Boagni (875) and UC Davis’ Dani Nafekh (809) all have a chance to add the accomplishment this season.

5 - Games that UC Irvine's Morgan Green has scored 25 or more points in conference play.

10 - Double-doubles by Cal State Fullerton's Daeja Smith, second in the league.

18 - UC Davis conference win streak that was snapped by CSUN last week.

2,197 - Average attendance of home games for Hawai'i this season, best in the Big West.
