Hawaii Leads Crowded Men's Hoops Race

2017-18 Men's Basketball Release No. 12

Eight teams have sustained at least two losses in men's basketball conference play.  Hawai‘i is the exception.  The 4-1 Rainbow Warriors host Cal State Fullerton in hopes of expanding their lead in the league standings.

Hawai‘i Takes Over First Place
Hawai‘i is the new leader atop the Big West standings thanks to a four-game winning streak.  The Rainbow Warriors overcame a loss in their conference opener to Long Beach State to reel off wins over CSUN, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis.

UH attempts to tie its best Big West start of 5-1, initially set by the 2015-16 NCAA Tournament squad, with a Saturday home game against Cal State Fullerton.  The Rainbow Warriors are 5-0 against the Titans inside the Stan Sheriff Center since joining the Big West for the 2012-13 season.

Aggies Attempt To Extend Home Streak
UC Davis returns to Hamilton Court this week with the aim of increasing its 17-game home court winning streak.  The streak is currently the fifth-longest nationally.  Only Cincinnati (36), Texas Southern (27), Purdue (19) and Vermont (19) have longer streaks.  The Aggies are 6-0 at home this season and won all 11 home games during the 2016-17 campaign.

On The Tube, On The Tablet
Three games will be available this week via Fox Sports West or WatchESPN.  FOX is airing a Thursday showdown between conference contenders UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Fullerton from Titan Gym.

Thur., Jan. 15 – UC Santa Barbara at Cal State Fullerton

Wed., Jan. 24 – UC Riverside at UC Irvine
Sat., Jan. 27 – UC Santa Barbara at UC Riverside

Gauchos Match Best Start In Ten Years
UC Santa Barbara improved to 9-0 at home with Saturday’s 70-58 triumph over UC Irvine.  With a 14-5 overall record, the Gauchos have equalled their best start in 10 years as the 2007-08 squad also achieved that mark.  That squad ultimately ended up winning a school record 23 games.  UCSB’s 9-0 start at home is the best since the 1989-90 team began the schedule 10-0 in the Thunderdome.

Monson Ties Douglass For No. 6 On Wins List

Long Beach State’s Dan Monson moved into a tie for sixth place in Big West history with conference win No. 109.  The 11th-year Beach head coach now has 109 Big West victories, alongside UC Irvine’s Pat Douglass (1997-2010).  Monson tries to grab sole possession of sixth place on Thursday at Cal Poly.

Ahmad Eyes 1,000-Point Mark
Cal State Fullerton junior Khalil Ahmad is closing in on the distinction of becoming the 24th player in program history to accumulate 1,000 career points.  He sits at 956 points entering the week.  Ahmad has combined for as many as 55 points in back-to-back games this season, so he is well within range of achieving the milestone at Hawai‘i on Saturday.

Home Sweet Home
The home team is 17-7 so far in Big West games, with five schools unbeaten at home in conference play.

UC RIVERSIDE AT UC IRVINE (WatchESPN) - UC Irvine has won the last six meetings – and 11 of the last 12 – against UC Riverside. LONG BEACH STATE AT CAL POLY (BIGWEST.TV) - The last two meetings between these two at Mott Athletics Center went into overtime or double overtime.  Beach junior Temidayo Yussuf has pulled down 14 rebounds in each of the last two games.  Since hitting 19 threes against Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 6, Cal Poly is shooting 21.0% (13-for-62) from distance over the last three games.

UC SANTA BARBARA AT CAL STATE FULLERTON (FOX SPORTS WEST) - Since the 2004-05 season, UC Santa Barbara is 4-9 against Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym.
