BIG WEST AT A GLANCE
Tennis Season Approaches First Swing
The 2018 Big West tennis season has arrived, and a couple of teams are in action this week.
The Hawai‘i women – with two straight appearances in the Big West Tournament title match – host Washington on Friday. The Rainbow Wahine then welcome No. 6 Pepperdine to the islands on Jan. 20. UH is led by two-time first team all-conference selection Marina Hruba and Petra Melounova, who is the reigning Big West Player of the Year. Melounova also was named 2017 Big West Freshman of the Year.
The UC Davis men also are in action with a pair of matches in Fresno. The Aggies play a doubleheader on Saturday against Pacific and host Fresno State. UC Davis has put together four straight winning seasons with at least 14 wins in each, and has accumulated a total of 61 victories over that span.
The Hawai‘i men are idle, but played four matches over a six-day stretch to become the de facto Big West season debut squad. The Rainbow Warriors took on stiff competition with doubleheaders against No. 21 Florida State and No. 24 Texas Tech. Although UH lost all four matches, the team was competitive throughout, and picked up a pair of points in both contests against the Red Raiders. UH does not return to action until a home match on Feb. 17 against Air Force.
Most of the remainder of Big West squads join the action next week, including the beginning of a grueling 35-match schedule for the UC Riverside men with contests against Hope International, Grand Canyon and Nevada.
Big West Represented In National Rankings
The Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association has a handful of Big West singles and doubles teams represented in its preseason rankings.
UC Santa Barbara junior Nicolas Moreno de Alboran is ranked No. 42 nationally in singles. A 2017 All-Big West first team selection in singles and doubles, de Alboran posted a 14-10 dual match record in singles. He is also ranked No. 44 in the country with doubles partner Anders Holm. The duo of de Alboran and Holm registered a 15-6 record from the No. 2 position last year.
On the women’s side, Cal State Fullerton freshman Genevieve Zeidan is tied for No. 103 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings. A native of Taipei, Taiwan, Zeidan compiled a dominant 11-1 record in singles during the fall season. The CSUN tandem of Alicia Dinkelmeyer and Elisa Elhadj gathered a No. 59 ranking in doubles.
