Final Week Of Non-Conference Action Looms For Women's Hoops

12/26/2017

Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 8

alt

The final week of non-conference play for women's hoops coincides with the final week of the 2017 calendar year, as the league's clubs will put 2017 in the rearview and look forward to conference play in 2018.

AROUND THE BIG WEST

ROLL TITANS ROLL
Cal State Fullerton has been one of the league’s most pleasant surprises as the club has already surpassed its win total (5) from a year ago (4). The team is also on a three-game win streak, its longest winning run since a four-game run on December 31, 2014 through January 15, 2015.

DESIGNATED SHOOTER
UC Irvine freshman Dani Guglielmo made it known that she has one duty on offense, putting up threes. The guard has 31 attempts from the field in her 10 games of action, with 28 field goal attempts coming from beyond the arc. She has had some big moments from three-point land, hitting a career-high five in a home win over Portland on November 17 and hitting a trio in a road triumph over Seattle last week.

PILING THEM UP
CSUN’s Channon Fluker has been on a roll since the end of November, leading the Matadors to four wins in their last six games. The junior center is averaging 21.0 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks over that stretch, putting up five double-doubles and scoring 20 or more points in five of those six outings.

SHOOT AND DEFEND
UC Davis is one of the nation’s top shooting teams while also being one of the top teams in shooting defense. The Aggies are 34th in the NCAA in shooting (45.6) and 13th in three-point shooting (40.1). Conversely, UCD is 39th in the country opponents’ field goal percentage (35.6) while also holding teams to an outstanding 30.6% from beyond the arc.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB
UC Riverside senior guard Michelle Curry joined an illustrious club last week as she recorded her 1,000th career point. Curry’s game-high 19 against South Dakota pushed her over the milestone, making her the 18th player in Highlander history to achieve the feat.

DON’T TAKE ME OUT
UC Santa Barbara freshman Sarah Bates had played 30+ minutes on only three occasions prior to last week, but she blew that out of the water against San Diego State. The guard played all 40 minutes against the Aztecs, putting that time to good use with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. The rebounds and steals were career-highs while the point total was her highest since a 25-point effort November 10 against Northern Arizona.

GRAND STATUS 2017-18 EDITION
UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch, CSUN junior Channon Fluker and UC Riverside senior Michelle Curry became the 138th,139th and 140th members of the Big West 1,000-point this season, as they all crossed the milestone during non-conference play.

Several players around the league are also approaching the 1,000-point milestone. UC Davis’ Pele Gianotti (942), Cal Poly’s Lynn Leaupepe (886), UC Davis’ Rachel Nagel (840), CSUN’s Serafina Maulupe (859), Hawai’i’s Sarah Toeaina (876), CSUN’s Tessa Boagni (758) and UC Davis’ Dani Nafekh (728) all have a chance to add the accomplishment this season.

FAST BREAK POINTS

6 - Double doubles by Cal State Fullerton's Daeja Smith and CSUN's Channon Fluker, most in the Big West.

10 - Combined wins by Cal State Fullerton (5) and UC Irvine (5), surpassing their combined total (9) from last year.

22 - Points scored by UCI's Deijah Blanks against Seattle, a career-high.

103 - Made field goals by UCD's Morgan Bertsch, 20 more than the next best player in the Big West.
