Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 6

alt

Finals are in full swing around the league, but the Big West women's basketball schedule has some marquee matchups ahead, highlighted by #7 Tennessee visiting the Pyramid to take on Long Beach State.

AROUND THE BIG WEST

HAVEN’T SEEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS (LATELY)
UC Davis won a pair of games last week to extend its record to 9-0, the best start for the program in its Division I history. Its also the best start by a Big West school since Hawai’i began the 1991-92 campaign 11-0.

THE ‘EATERS ARE STREAKING
UC Irvine won a pair of games last week, upping its win streak to a season-high three games. The three-game run is the most for the program since a a similar run in March of 2014. It’s also the first time UCI has won back-to-back road games since defeating Nevada and Denver in November of 2013.

LET THE THREES RAIN DOWN
UC Davis ranks 16th in the NCAA in three-pointers made (89), getting there with a team effort from beyond the arc. Five players have hit at least 10 buckets from three-point land, and three of those players rank in the top three in the Big West. Senior Rachel Nagel is tied for tops in the league with 19 threes, while fellow classmates Pele Gianotti and Dani Nafekh are tied for third with 18 makes.

SEEMS BACKWARDS
You would expect guards to be among the league leaders in free throw percentage, but the top four spots in the Big West are occupied by players who are listed as forwards or centers. Leading the league is junior forward Morgan Bertsch (85.2%) followed by UC Santa Barbara senior forward Drew Edelman (80.4%), CSUN junior center Channon Fluker (80.4%) and Hawai’i sophomore forward Makenna Woodfolk (80.0%).

SPEAKING OF WOODFOLK
Woodfolk showed her potential as a true freshman last year for the ‘Bows, averaging 5.3 points and a team-high 6.0 rebounds in 20.8 minutes per game. Her sophomore season has shown her to be one of the league’s toughest matchups as she is averaging 9.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 24.4 minutes per outing.

OH YEA...WE PLAY HERE
You’ll have to forgive UC Riverside if it may have forgotten what its homecourt looks like after a seven-game road trip, but the Highlanders reacclimated in a hurry with a tight win over CSU Bakersfield. The home team won’t be there for long as UCR heads out on the road for a three-game trip, but then returns back to the SRC for six games in a nine-game stretch.

SOMETHING’S MISSING
Cal Poly is ranked second in the Big West in scoring (73.3), third in field goal percentage (42.8) and three-point percentage (34.0) and fourth in assists per game (15.3). Despite their offensive prowess, the Mustangs rank last in the league in free throw percentage (62.9). This comes a year after the team led the league with a 75.2% conversion rate from the charity stripe.

GRAND STATUS 2017-18 EDITION
UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch and CSUN sophomore Channon Fluker became the 138th and 139th members of the Big West 1,000-point this season, as both crossed the milestone in the first two weeks of the campaign.

Several players around the league are also approaching the 1,000-point milestone. UC Riverside’s Michelle Curry (992), UC Davis’ Pele Gianotti (934), Cal Poly’s Lynn Leaupepe (886), UC Davis’ Rachel Nagel (828), CSUN’s Serafina Maulupe (859), Hawai’i’s Sarah Toeaina (852) and UC Davis’ Dani Nafekh (717) all have a chance to add the accomplishment this season.

FAST BREAK POINTS

1 - Number of Player of the Week awards CSUN's Channon Fluker needs to reach double-digit awards all-time.

5 - Wins by UC Irvine, equaling its total from last season.

11.3 - Steals per game by Cal Poly, tops in the Big West.

19 - Three-pointers hit by Cal State Fullerton's Hannah Thompson, tied for the league lead.
