Final Exams Week Still Feature On-Court Tests For Men's Hoops Teams

2017-18 Men's Basketball Release No. 6

Fall exams for several schools creates a light 10-game schedule for Big West men's hoops teams, but the tests aren't limited to the classroom.  Seven of the 10 contests are on the road.

Fall Exams Equal Trimmed Down Schedule
A number of Big West schools are taking final exams this week, resulting in a light 10-game schedule.  All nine squads are in action, but only Cal Poly plays more than once.  The Mustangs travel to Bethune-Cookman Tuesday, then return home Saturday against Princeton.

Gauchos Extend Win Streak To Seven
UC Santa Barbara upended two more teams last week to extend its winning streak to seven straight games going into the final exam period.  In defeating Omaha at home and Montana State on the road, the Gauchos are enjoying their longest string of success since reeling off nine consecutive in 2015-16.  The biggest test of UCSB’s young season comes this Sunday at USC, an opponent that has been ranked in the top 25 this season.

Titan Win Streak Moves To Five
Cal State Fullerton increased its win streak to five straight following a pair of wins against Portland and Utah Valley last week.  The Titans attempt to win a sixth game in a row on Saturday at California.  The 2015-16 squad was the last to win six consecutive.  The win at Portland snapped an eight-game skid against non-conference opponents in true road contests.  The Titans seek their first 7-3 start since the 2011-12 season.

UC Davis Home Court Streak Now At 14
UC Davis improved to 3-0 at home this season with last week’s wins over Pacific and William Jessup.  Dating to last season, the Aggies have now won 14 straight games on Hamilton Court.  That streak is tied for the sixth-longest in the nation with Wichita State, Purdue, UNC Asheville and Vermont.  Cincinnati owns the nation’s longest current home court win streak at 30.

Two Teams Ranked In Mid-Major Top 25
UC Davis remained in the Top 25 poll for a second straight week and jumped five spots to No. 20.  The Aggies were joined by UC Santa Barbara, which entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 21.  UC Irvine and Hawai‘i are also receiving votes.

Galloway Joins 500-Rebound Club
With eight rebounds at UT Rio Grande Valley last week, UC Irvine junior Jonathan Galloway became the 24th player in school history to accumulate 500 career rebounds.  The forward is the Big West’s active career leader with 502 rebounds.  He needs three more to surpass former teammate Alex Young (504, 2012-16) for the No. 23 spot.

Hail To The King
UC Santa Barbara forward Leland King II, a graduate transfer from Nevada, is one of the leading candidates for Big West Newcomer of the Year.  He has compiled five consecutive double-doubles, averaging 20.2 points and 12.4 rebounds during that stretch.

Perfect At The Line
Cal Poly junior Donovan Fields is a perfect 25-for-25 from the free throw line this year and has made 33 straight freebies dating to last season.

Long Beach State’s Dan Monson is the dean of Big West head coaches, in his 11th season on the sideline at the Walter Pyramid.  He ranks eighth all-time in conference history with 174 wins.  His 105 conference victories is good for seventh on the coaching leaderboard.  Only five Big West head coaches have accumulated 200 or more wins during their tenure with the conference – Bob Thomason (Pacific, 436), Jerry Tarkanian (Long Beach State & UNLV, 405), Bob Williams (UC Santa Barbara, 313), Neil McCarthy (New Mexico State, 248) and Jerry Pimm (UC Santa Barbara, 222).
