UC Davis Men's Soccer Coaching Staff Honored
2017 United Soccer Coaches Regional Coaching Staffs of the Year
The UC Davis men’s soccer coaching staff received Far West Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors from United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday.
Head coach Dwayne Shaffer, Associate Head Coach Jason Hotaling and Assistant Coach Chris Leer were one of eight Division I staffs honored, joining those from New Hampshire (East), Western Michigan (Great Lakes), Indiana (Midwest), Wake Forest (South), Florida International (Southeast) and Air Force (West).
The Aggies finished 11-7-3 overall with a Big West North Division title – the second in school history – going 7-2-1 in conference play. Shaffer, named the 2017 Big West Coach of the Year, took his squad to the Big West Tournament championship match for the second time in school history.
Shaffer earned his 200th career Division I coaching victory in a 3-2 win over Loyola Marymount on Sept. 8, and his 200th win as the UC Davis head coach in a “senior day” win over Causeway rival Sacramento State on Oct. 29.
The 11 victories marked the third-highest total for the Aggies since moving to Division I in 2007. Shaffer’s squad also featured 2017 Big West Defender of the Year Roy Boateng, and first-team all-conference honors for Boateng, Onah Power, and Nabi Kibunguchy – as well as eight total honorees, the most for the program since 2007.
The eight Division I staffs will be honored at the College Coaches Awards Reception on January 18, 2018, in Philadelphia, in conjunction with the 71st annual United Soccer Coaches Convention.
