2017-18 Men's Basketball Release No. 4

TIPOFF TIME

Big West Continues Non-Conference Play
The Big West non-conference schedule moves into December with a healthy dose of games against fellow teams on the west coast.

After a slew of tournaments that took place Thanksgiving week, single-game opponents dot this week’s schedule.

The Big West will engage in a number of showdowns against the Pac-12 Conference.  CSUN travels to Californa, Long Beach State visits Arizona and UC Davis travels to Washington State.  After playing five straight games at home to open the season, Hawai‘i treks to the mainland for the first time for a Saturday matinee against Utah.

In a rare host game against a Pac-12 foe, LBSU welcomes Stanford to the Walter Pyramid on Sunday.

Several games also take place against the WCC.  UC Santa Barbara seeks to extend its three-game win streak at San Francisco before hosting San Diego later in the week.  UC Riverside hosts Pacific and travels to Pepperdine.  Cal Poly also welcomes the Waves for a home game.

Other home games of note include Fresno State at LBSU and Nevada at UC Irvine.

Home Sweet Home
Big West teams are an impressive 14-3 at home so far.  Ten of the 18 games on this week’s slate are on Big West home courts.

Titans Go 2-1 At Wooden Legacy
For the third time in the 11-year history of the Wooden Legacy, a Big West team went 2-1 at the tournament.  Cal State Fullerton joined Long Beach State (2014) and Pacific (2012) on the list after the Titans posted wins over Sacramento State and Harvard on their home court.  CSF also put a scare into the SEC’s Georgia in the opener.

Long Beach State Defeats Pac-12 Foe
Long Beach State became the second Big West school to post a victory over a Pac-12 opponent this season when the Beach knocked off Oregon State at the Advocare Invitational last week.  It marked the second straight season that LBSU had defeated the Beavers.  On Nov. 10, UC Riverside toppled California on the road in the season opener.

Moneke Earns Preseason Honors
UC Davis forward Chima Moneke is on the national radar for recognition as he enters his senior season.  Moneke was recently named to the CollegeInsider.com preseason Watch List for both the Lute Olson Award and Lou Henson Award.  The Lute Olson Award recognizes the nation’s top Division I player who has played at least two seasons.  Moneke is featured on a list of 40 players from conferences including the Power 5.  The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I mid-major player.

BIG WEST COACHING

Long Beach State’s Dan Monson is the dean of Big West head coaches, in his 11th season on the sideline at the Walter Pyramid.  He ranks eighth all-time in conference history with 170 wins.  His 105 conference victories is good for seventh on the coaching leaderboard.  Only five Big West head coaches have accumulated 200 or more wins during their tenure with the conference – Bob Thomason (Pacific, 436), Jerry Tarkanian (Long Beach State & UNLV, 405), Bob Williams (UC Santa Barbara, 313), Neil McCarthy (New Mexico State, 248) and Jerry Pimm (UC Santa Barbara, 222).
