Helping UC Riverside to perhaps its biggest win in the school’s 17-year Division I history, senior Alex Larsson (Södertälje, Sweden/Södertälje Knights Club Team) captured his first career Big West Men’s Basketball Player of the Week award.
Larsson delivered his second career double-double with career highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Highlanders upended Pac-12 foe California, 74-66, at Haas Pavilion.
The 6-10 forward made 7 of 14 shots from the field and four of his 13 boards came on the offensive end. Larsson played 28 minutes in a game the Highlanders led from start to finish.
His breakaway dunk with 1:49 to play gave UCR a 69-54 lead.
It is UC Riverside’s second-ever win over the Golden Bears, and marks the first time in the school’s Division I history that it won a season opener on the road.
In addition, the win was UCR’s first over a Pac-12 team since knocking off Washington State on Nov. 27, 2011 in the 76 Classic.
Others nominated: Donovan Fields (Cal Poly); Jackson Rowe (Cal State Fullerton); Terrell Gomez (CSUN); Barry Ogalue (Long Beach State); Evan Leonard (UC Irvine); Max Heidegger (UC Santa Barbara); Mike Thomas (Hawai‘i)
