Record-Setting Bertsch Takes Home Season's First Women's Hoops Honor
UC Davis junior Morgan Bertsch (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa HS) earned her second career Big West Women’s Basketball Player of the week award on the strength of 61 percent shooting and a 23.0 scoring average in two victories to open the 2017-18 season.
The 6-4 forward also hit several milestones in helping the Aggies topple Washington State (91-76) and Pepperdine (69-64) at The Pavilion.
Bertsch became the 18th player in school history – and the fourth to do it as a junior – to reach 1,000 career points when she tied her career high with 27 against Pepperdine. Making 13 of 18 floor shots, Bertsch set a school Division I record for field goal makes and came within three of the all-time Aggie mark set in 1993.
She scored 21 of her 27 in the second half against the Waves while adding a rebound and two steals in 26 minutes.
In Friday’s season opener, Bertsch finished with a game-high 19 points in 22 minutes against Washington State. The Cougars entered the game as an “others receiving votes” team in the Associated Press preseason poll. Bertsch shot 7 of 15 from the field and made 5 of 6 from the charity stripe, chipping in four rebounds, three assists and a steal to her line.
Bertsch made 20 of her 33 field goal attempts for the week.
Others nominated: Devin Stanback (Cal Poly); Triann Thompson (Cal State Fullerton); Shanaijah Davison (Long Beach State); Deijah Blanks (UC Irvine); Sarah Bates (UC Santa Barbara); Julissa Tago (Hawai‘i)
