Cal Poly's Swarnjit Boyal led the way for the Big West Friday as the league's cross country clubs competed in the NCAA West Regional meet.

Boyal finished 10th in the men's 10K, crossing the finish line in 29:47.2. His effort puts him solid position to be an at-large selection to the NCAA Championships next weekend. Finishing not far behind him was the Big West 8K champion Thomas Madden of UC Davis. Madden finished in 16th in 29:52.2, also giving him a shot at advancing to the NCAA meet.

On the team side of the men's race, the league had five teams in the top 19 as Cal Poly (11th), UC Santa Barbara (14th), UC Davis (16th), Cal State Fullerton (17th) and UC Irvine (19th) earned their slots among the 30 teams in attendance.

The women's 6K results were led by Big West Athlete of the Year Jenna Hinkle as the UC Santa Barbara runner finished in 27th in 20:16.8. The team results had Cal Poly as the highest finishing team in 11th, then had five conference teams finish from 16th-20th (UCSB, UCR, CP, CSF, UCD).

San Francisco and Stanford on the women's side and Portland and Washington on the men's side gain automatic qualification to the NCAA meet by virtue of their top two finishes. Others will fall into a pool of 13 at-large berths along with clubs from the eight other regions across the country. The top four individual finishers not already on a top-two scoring team will automatically advance from every region provided they finished in the top 25 at each respective meet, to be joined by two more final individual entrants selected on an at-large basis by an NCAA subcommittee. In all, 38 individuals in each gender will be chosen to compete in the NCAA Championships. The complete fields for the national championship will be announced on Saturday morning on
