Cal State Fullerton Womens Soccer Heads to Pepperdine for the NCAA First Round

The Cal State Fullerton women's soccer team will make its eighth appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship when the Titans take on Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. The field of 64 teams was announced Monday afternoon by the Division I Women's Soccer Committee.

CAL STATE FULLERTON RAISES CUP
For the seventh time in Cal State Fullerton history, the Titans claimed the Big West Tournament title, its fourth crown in five years. CSF battled to a 1-1 draw with CSUN in double overtime and clinched an NCAA Tournament berth after a 4-3 advantage over the Matadors in penalty kicks. The Titans earned a spot in the title match after defeating regular season champion, UC Irvine, 2-1 Thursday. The showdown was the eighth time the Titans appeared in the championship, the most of any squad in the Big West.
BERTSCH IS MOST VALUABLE
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Bertsch received Most Valuable Player honors and became the seventh Titan to do so. The Co-Goalkeeper of the Year recorded a save in 110:00 minutes of action during the title match and stopped two penalty kicks to help earn the Big West Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tounament.
TITANS TO THE TOURNAMENT
Cal State Fullerton will travel to Malibu, Calif. to face No. 11 Pepperdine in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Titans will make its eighth appearance in the NCAA DI women’s soccer championhship as the Women’s Soccer Committee announced, Monday. CSF last saw the waves in 2014 where Pepperdine would win 2-1 in OT. CSF is 4-9-2 overall against the Waves in program history. The Big West is 0-2 against Pepperdine in 2017.

SANCHEZ SCORES BIG
CSUN’s Cynthia Sanchez scored two goals in the semifinals to help her squad to the championship. Her two goals tie for second-most in Big West Tournament history while her foud points are seventh-best. Her five shots taken versus UC Riverside are ninth-best in the record books.
UC IRVINE CLAIMS REGULAR SEASON TITLE
UC Irvine claimed its third all-time regular season title with a 1-0 win over Cal State Fullerton in the regular season finale. The Anteaters add to its collection of hardware as the 2017 squad joins the ranks of the 2010 and 2011 squads.
