Furtado, McKeegan Named Top Women's Soccer Performers

Sonest Furtado and Mandy McKeegan earned the women’s soccer weekly awards for their efforts in conference play.

Furtado Involved In Every Hawai‘i Goal

Hawai‘i senior Sonest Furtado (Wai’anae, O’ahu/Wai’anae HS) played a role in all three of her team’s goals as the recipient of Big West Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Furtado earned her second career citation after also winning the award on Sept. 19.

Furtado scored both goals in the Rainbow Wahine’s 2-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara.  She spun her defender around and fired to the left past the Gaucho keeper for her first goal.  Furtado then latched onto a long pass in the 86th minute, and after a few dribbles to establish position, hit a laser to the left side for her third game-winning goal of the year.

Her fifth and sixth goals on the season also boosted her career total to 13, moving her into a tie for 10th place in UH history.

Furtado returned to action in a 2-1 loss to CSUN and delivered the assist on UH’s only goal of the match.  She took seven shots and put five of them on frame over the two contests.

Others nominated: Jessica Johnson (Cal Poly); Kaycee Hoover (Cal State Fullerton); Cynthia Sanchez (CSUN); Mahlah Catline (UC Davis); Noel Baham (UC Irvine); Amanda Ball (UC Santa Barbara)

McKeegan Helps Aggies Remain Unbeaten In Big West Play

Tasked with limiting two of the top scoring teams in the conference, UC Davis senior Mandy McKeegan (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) did that and more in claiming Big West Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors.

The midfielder added some offensive punch to her arsenal with the game-winning goal in a 1-0 triumph at UC Irvine, and the game-tying assist in a 1-1 draw at Cal State Fullerton.

UCI, which is No. 1 in goals during Big West play with 11, was shutout for only the fourth time all season as McKeegan and her cohorts held the Anteaters to only 10 shot attempts for the game.  McKeegan’s goal came in the 89th minute as she put home her own rebound off a penalty kick attempt.

McKeegan’s assist against the Titans resulted on a corner kick.  Down 1-0 in the game, the Aggies equalized in the 77th minute as McKeegan’s service found the head of Mahlah Catline for the score.  McKeegan upped her team-high total in assists to four.  She has 11 career assists, just three shy of fifth in school history.

Others nominated: Sophia Brown (Cal Poly); Morgan Bertsch (Cal State Fullerton); Jovani McCaskill (CSUN); Shelby Lee (UC Irvine)
