BIG WEST TID BITS

Mustangs Maintain Perfect Record After Trip to Hawai’i:
In a battle of the undefeated last week, Hawai’i took the first two sets, 25-16 and 25-22,  before Cal Poly came storming back to claim the final three sets (25-15, 25-22, 15-9) to down the Rainbow Wahine in Honolulu to maintain its perfect conference mark (6-0).  Hawai’i dropped to 5-1 with the loss. It was the Mustangs’ fifth win all-time against the Rainbow Wahine and the first since 2006.

Aggies Score Big Win:
Fueled by Freshman Mahalia White’s career-best 23 kills, UC Davis earned its first Big West Conference victory of the season and its first-ever win over Long Beach State.  The Aggies and Beach had met 25 times previous to last week’s match. UC Davis had taken Long Beach State to the full five sets in 2007, 2008 and 2010, but had never posted a victory in the series.

Cal Poly Cracks Top 25:
For the first time since 2008, the Cal Poly volleyball team has been ranked in the AVCA National Top 25 rankings as they received the 24th spot in the latest poll.  The last time they were ranked inside the top 25 was week six of the 2008 season when they were No. 22 in the country.

Home Sweet Home:
Following a pair of victories last weekend against Long Beach State and CSUN, UC Irvine improved to 6-0 when playing in front of its hometown fans.   Unfortunately the Anteaters take a quick trip to Cal State Fullerton on Friday to battle the Titans before returning home for a three-match homestand that begins Saturday when they entertain UC Riverside.

League-leading Cal Poly is also perfect at home, but have only played two contests at Mott Gym so far this season.  The Mustangs wrap up a four-match road trip this weekend at UC Santa Barbara (9/14) before returning home October 20-21 to host CSUN and Long Beach State.

Around The Big West:
Cal Poly tops the Big West in kills per set (15.29), hitting percentage (.310) and assists (14.19).   Hawai’i tops the conference in blocks with a 2.58 average and opponent hitting percentage with a .171 clip.  UC Riverside leads the way in digs (16.69 DPS) and the Anteaters of UC Irvine are dominating at the service line as they sport a 1.75 service ace average.

Mustangs Extend Win Streak, And Best Program Start In Over 30 Years:
Cal Poly, who enters the week riding a 11-match win streak, improved to 16-2 on the season last week, its best start since the 1985 team started 18-1.  The Mustangs aren’t just winning these matches, they are dominating as they have swept 13 of their opponents this season. The Mustangs’ two losses this year were against Top 25 opponents - No. 8 Washington and No. 14 Oregon.

'Bows and Matadors meet for the #BWConESPN3 Saturday.ESPNU To Televise LBSU-UH Showdown:
ESPNU is scheduled to air the Hawai‘i at Long Beach State women’s volleyball match Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. (PT) inside the Walter Pyramid.  The match-up pits two programs who have combined to win – either shared or outright – each of the last six Big West Conference championships.  Long Beach State all-time has claimed 13 conference titles to Hawaii’s 10, making them the two winningest programs in league history.

Sister Power:
The Van Winden sisters, Torrey, a sophomore transfer, and Adlee, who is a junior, are leading the Mustangs at the net as they pace the team and sit second and fifth in the Big West with kill averages of 5.42 and 3.73. Both have already earned Big West Player of the Weeks nods with Adlee earning the first of the season and Torrey collecting back-to-back accolades the following two weeks. Torrey also sits fifth in the conference’s top 10  in hitting percentage (.354), while Adlee is tied for seventh in service aces (.29 APS).

New Head Coaches:
The 2017 women’s volleyball season will be missing two legendary coaches at the helm of their respective programs as Hawai’i’s Dave Shoji and Long Beach State’s Brian Gimmillaro both retired in the offseason.  Between the two, there was 74 years of coaching experience as Shoji led the Rainbow Wahine for 42 years and Gimmillaro guided the Beach for 32.

Hawai’i Tabbed To Claim 2017 Title:
The University of Hawai’i was selected to capture its third straight Big West Conference women’s volleyball championship, and fifth out of the past six years, after claiming six first-place votes en route to a 78 point total as part of the Big West women’s volleyball preseason coaches poll as voted on by the nine head coaches.  The Mustangs of Cal Poly, nabbing two first place votes and 71 total points, earned the second slot in the preseason poll.  Securing the third place spot with one first place vote and a total of 65 point was Long Beach State. The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara sit fourth with 47 points and is followed by UC Irvine after registering 41 points.  UC Davis nabbed the sixth slot after collecting 39 points and is followed by CSUN, who holds the seventh spot with 33 points. UC Riverside locked-in the eighth position after grabbing 19 points and Cal State Fullerton rounds out the nine-team field  with 10 points.
