In The Win Column
Cal Poly joined the win column with a 1-0 victory over Saint Mary’s in Sunday’s home opener. The Mustangs got off the schneide following a season-opening 0-4-0 roadtrip, utilizing junior defender Nick Carroll’s first career goal against the Gaels. Cal Poly looks to start a win streak with a game on Saturday at San Diego State.
Two more teams are aiming for their first win in 2017. UC Santa Barbara (0-3-2) is winless through its first five games of the season for the first time since 1998 and the first time in the Tim Vom Steeg era. The Gauchos attempt to break that streak on Tuesday, as they head back east to face St. John’s in a match that will be streamed on ESPN3.
UC Riverside is 0-4-0, and has lost 10 straight games dating to last season. It is the second longest losing streak in the program’s Division I history. The 2001 team lost 11 straight games. UCR looks to capture its first win on Thursday at Grand Canyon.
Ranked Wins Accumulate
CSUN and UC Irvine both dropped close contests against tournament host New Mexico at the Grange and Ashwill Invitational in Albuquerque last weekend, but they did not come away empty handed.
Both the Matadors and Anteaters recorded victories over then-No. 9 Denver. CSUN earned a 2-0 shutout while UCI was a 1-0 victor. Those are the second and third wins for the Big West against a top-25 ranked team. CSUN knocked off then-No. 14 Utah Valley on Sept. 1.
UC Davis gets its crack at Denver, which is No. 25 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll this week. The Aggies travel to the Mile High City on Friday before facing Air Force on Sunday.
No. 9 Pacific makes its way down the Central Coast to tangle with UCSB on Friday.
UC Irvine Enters The Rankings
Under first-year head coach Yossi Raz, UC Irvine is back in the national rankings. Top Drawer Soccer pegged the Anteaters No. 23 in this week’s rankings. UCI (3-2-1) posted its first win over a ranked opponent since 2014 when it defeated No. 9 Denver last week.
Boehme Sits At The Top
Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Simon Boehme is tied for No. 1 nationally in saves per game (7.0) and ranks No. 2 in total saves (35). Boehme has been plenty busy, registering seven or more stops in three of his five starts. He had a career-best 12 saves at Notre Dame on Aug. 27, a figure that ranks No. 2 in the country this season.
Shaffer Reaches Milestone
UC Davis mentor Dwayne Shaffer compiled win No. 200 as a Division I head coach when the Aggies toppled Loyola Marymount by a 3-2 score last Friday. He improved to 200-168-51 overall, with 193 of those wins coming at UC Davis. He also coached one season at Dayton.
