ESPNU To Televise Long Beach State, Hawai'i Women's Volleyball Rivalry
ESPNU Women's Volleyball Release
ESPNU will air the Hawai‘i at Long Beach State women’s volleyball match Friday, October 13 at 7:00 p.m. (PT) inside the Walter Pyramid.
The match-up pits two programs who have combined to win – either shared or outright – each of the last six Big West Conference championships. Long Beach State all-time has claimed 13 conference titles to Hawaii’s 10, making them the two winningest programs in league history.
Historically, LBSU and UH also rate among the nation’s most successful programs with seven national championships and 18 Final Four appearances between them.
Two-time defending Big West champion Hawai‘i seeks a three-peat under first-year head coach Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, who replaced the legendary Dave Shoji as the architect of four national championships and a 42-year run with 1,202 wins, second-most in NCAA Division I history. The third head coach in Hawai‘i history, Ah Mow-Santos was a two-time AVCA first team All-American setter and appeared in three Olympic Games for the United States. The conference coaches selected UH to win the 2017 title in their preseason poll.
Long Beach State first-year head coach Joy McKienzie-Fuerbringer was an All-American setter for the Beach and helped the 1993 team win a national championship. She is the fifth head coach in program history, replacing Brian Gimmillaro, who retired after 32 years with three NCAA titles and 835 career victories among his accomplishments. LBSU was picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll.
