Trio Carries Undefeated Record Into Week Two
Big West Women's Volleyball Release - Week 2
BIG WEST TID BITS
What’s On Tap: For the second straight week both Long Beach State and Hawai’i are facing Top 25 opponents. The Beach are slated to face No. 9 Kansas as part of the Wolverine Invitational hosted by Utah Valley, while the Rainbow Wahine entertain No. 22 Utah on the final day of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Invitational. Cal Poly gets its first stab at a win over a Top 25 team this weekend when it battles No. 8 Washington as part of the Washington/Seattle Tournament. The Big West was 0-4 against ranked opponents last week.
UC Riverside and CSUN host their first events of the year this weekend. The Highlanders, pairing up with Big West member Cal State Fullerton for the Fullerton-Riverside Classic, welcome Chicago State, San Jose State and Howard to the SRC. Like UCR, the Highlanders are teaming up with Pepperdine for the CSUN-Pepperdine Challenge where they take on Weber State, Pepperdine and Northeastern in the three-day event.
UC Davis Opens Season With Tourney Win: Posting a 3-0 record at the UNLV Invitational earned UC Davis team champion honors. The Aggies knocked off both Eastern Washington and host UNLV, 3-1, on Friday before sweeping Binghamton on Saturday. Junior outside hitter Brianna Karsseboom captured Tournament MVP honors, while junior middle blocker and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Matias also made the all-tournament team.
Get Your Brooms: The Cal Poly Mustangs opened the 2017 season sweeping all three of their opponents at the NIU Holiday Inn Express Invitational - Dayton, High Point and host Northern Illinois - to claim the team title. All three wins were over defending champions of their respective conferences. Junior outside hitter Adlee Van Winden was named Tournament MVP, while teammates Taylor Nelson and Torrey Van Winden also nabbed spots on the all-tournament team. This marks only the second time in 11 years that the Mustangs opened the season with three consecutive wins, the other time coming in 2015 where they started the year 5-0 before suffering their first loss.
Gaucho Sets Record Opening Weekend: In the Gauchos’ 3-2 loss to No. 15 Florida State, sophomore Lindsey Ruddins set a new UCSB rally-scoring era record for kills in a single match with 36. That total ranks second all-time in Gaucho lore behind Roberta Gehlke’s program-record 38 kills, set on Sept. 30, 1999 against Long Beach State.
'Eaters Go 3-0: UC Irvine was the third team to remain perfect after the first weekend of play, knocking off host California, Seattle and Loyola Chicago en route to capturing the Cal Molten Classic. Junior Haley DeSales was named tournament MVP while junior Ali Kournelis was also named to the All-Tournament team. The Anteaters look to keep their perfect record in tact this weekend at the Marcia E. Hamilton Classic where they are set to face Kennesaw State, host Saint Louis and Illinois State.
New Head Coaches: The 2017 women’s volleyball season will be missing two legendary coaches at the helm of their respective programs as Hawai’i’s Dave Shoji and Long Beach State’s Brian Gimmillaro both retired in the offseason. Between the two, there was 74 years of coaching experience as Shoji led the Rainbow Wahine for 42 years and Gimmillaro guided the Beach for 32. To put that into perspective, the combined head coaching experience in the Big West between all nine current women’s volleyball coaches is 28 with CSUN’s Jeff Stork leading the pack with 14 years at the helm.
Hawai’i Tabbed To Claim 2017 Title: The University of Hawai’i was selected to capture its third straight Big West Conference women’s volleyball championship, and fifth out of the past six years, after claiming six first-place votes en route to a 78 point total as part of the Big West women’s volleyball preseason coaches poll as voted on by the nine head coaches. The Mustangs of Cal Poly, nabbing two first place votes and 71 total points, earned the second slot in the preseason poll. Securing the third place spot with one first place vote and a total of 65 point was Long Beach State. The Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara sit fourth with 47 points and is followed by UC Irvine after registering 41 points. UC Davis nabbed the sixth slot after collecting 39 points and is followed by CSUN, who holds the seventh spot with 33 points. UC Riverside locked-in the eighth position after grabbing 19 points and Cal State Fullerton rounds out the nine-team field with 10 points.
