Long Beach State senior forward Ashley Gonzales has been selected to the Preseason Watch List for the MAC Hermann Trophy award, an honor given to the nation’s top collegiate women’s soccer player. Gonzales is one of 30 on the women's list as announced Tuesday.
As a junior, Gonzales led the Big West in goals (11) and points (25) and led Long Beach State to its third conference tournament title and its second-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. As the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Gonzales is also a two-time All-Big West First Team honoree in addition to the 2014 Freshman of the Year. The Ontario, Calif. native was also named to the 2016 NSCAA All-West Region First Team. Gonzales also led the Big West with 29 shots on goal last season while her 3-3 converted penalty kicks paced the competition.
The senior enters her final collegiate campaign with 13 game-winning scores, the seventh-most in the league record book and needs just three to set a new 49er program record. Her 28 career goals rank fifth in school history.
NCAA Division I coaches will vote on 15 semifinalists before naming three student-athletes to be placed on the final ballot. The winner will be announced in January.
