Ten Athletes Selected On Day Two Of MLB Draft

Three Titans, two Highlanders, two Dirtbags, a Mustang, a Matador, and an Anteater were selected on Day 2 of the 2017 #MLBDraft.Day two of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft held at the MLB Network in Secaucus, N.J., showcased ten Big West Conference student-athletes selected.  They join UC Irvine’s Keston Hiura and Cal Poly’s Spencer Howard, who were drafted on day one with Hiura going as the ninth overall pick to the Milwaukee Brewers and Howard joining the Philadelphia organization in the second round as the 45th selection.

Cal State Fullerton pitcher Connor Seabold kicked things off on day two as he went in the third round, as the 83rd overall pick, to the Philadelphia Phillies. Eleven picks later, teammate Scott Hurst was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals as the 9th pick.

Erich Uelmen became the second Mustang selected this year, going in the fourth round to the Chicago Cubs (135th pick), marking the fifth time in program history that Cal Poly had two top four round selections in the same draft, all under head coach Larry Lee.  UC Riverside’s Ryan Lillie was the Miami Marlins fifth round pick (149th overall) and was followed by a pair of Long Beach State picks.  Catcher David Banuelos went in the fifth round, 153rd overall, to the Seattle Mariners, while teammate Brock Lundquist was the Toronto Blue Jays 6th-round selection, 189th overall.

CSUN’s first player selected was pitcher Conner O’Neil, going in the seventh round to the New York Mets as the 217th overall pick.  The third Titan selected was John Gavin as the San Francisco Giants called his name in the eighth round as the 246th overall selection. The Minnesota Twins scooped up the last two Big West players selected on day two as UC Riverside’s Mark Contreras was nabbed in the ninth round (256th) and UC Irvine pitcher Calvin Faucher was picked up in the 10th round (286th)

Rounds 11-40, to complete the draft, will continue on Wednesday, June 14.
