Big West Concludes Day Three at NCAA Championships

Three Big West athletes competed on day three of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Friday in Eugene, Ore.
Long Beach State junior Vincent Calhoun made his first career NCAA appearance in the men’s high jump, finishing in a tie for 19th place with a clearance of 6-09.75 (2.08m). He earned honorable mention All-America accolades for his efforts.
Two seniors also began competition in the heptathlon as Riley Cooks of Long Beach State and Tori Usgaard of UC Santa Barbara competed in four events.
Cooks sits in 10th place with 3,277 points while Usgaard is 18th with 3,059 points.
The duo will contest the final three events tomorrow with a live stream available on ESPN3. ESPN also will televise action beginning at 5:30 p.m. (PT). The long jump takes place at 11:30 a.m., followed by the javelin (12:45 p.m.) and 800 meters (5:13 p.m.).
Cooks began the heptathlon with a sixth-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles (13.69). She then finished 17th in the high jump with a top mark of 5-00.50. The shot put yielded an eighth-place showing as she had a heave of 39-03. Cooks saved her best performance for last, the 200 meters, as she finished third with a time of 24.53 seconds.
Usgaard finished 18th in the 100 hurdles (14.38), 14th in the high jump (5-03), 20th in the shot put (35-04.75) and 18th in the 200 (25.77).
In addition to Cooks and Usgaard in the heptathlon, four Big West athletes will pursue NCAA glory on Saturday at Hayward Field. The schedule is as follows:
