With an exciting finish that came down to the final putt of the tournament, UC Santa Barbara, who entered day three with a six-stroke lead, narrowly escaped a charging CSUN team to claim its first Big West Conference Men’s Golf Championship since 1998 at the Sandpiper Golf Course (par 72; 7,093 yards) in Goleta, Calif.
Nick Swanson parred the 18th hole to give the Gauchos a team total of 852, which secured the team title by one stroke over CSUN, who closed an eight-stroke gap with consistent play but fell one stroke short with a team total of 853 (284-285-284). Cal Poly finished third at 855 and was followed by Long Beach State (861) and UC Davis (868). UC Irvine secured the sixth spot with a score of 870 and Cal State Fullerton was one stroke back at 871. UC Riverside (885) placed eighth and Hawai’i (894) rounded out the nine-team field.
CSUN’s Felix Mory led the tournament from day one after carding a 4-under 68. Another 68, followed by a final round score of 70, secured the school’s first Big West Conference Men’s Championship individual medalist honor with a 10-under 206. Four strokes back in second place was Long Beach State’s Joe Fryer with a three-round score of 210. Gauchos Nick Swanson (211) and Zach Smith (212) finished third and fourth, while UC Davis’ Ben Corfee and Cal Poly’s Grady Smith tied for fifth with a 54-hole total of 213.
With the championship title, the Gauchos earned the conference’s automatic into the NCAA Tournament, their first since receiving an at-large selection in 1999.
