UC Irvine Wins Hard Fought Battle Against Hawai‘i

No. 4 seed UC Irvine outlasted No. 5 seed Hawai‘i in a match much closer than the score indicated, winning 4-0 in the first round of the men's tennis tournament at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Anteaters secured the crucial doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match.  Luis Lopez and Sebastian Heim dispatched Felix Albert and Marcel Chan, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot.  The 'Eaters clinched the point at No. 3, where Vatsal Bajpai and Bruce Man-Son-Hing won by a break over Spencer Travalino and Fabian Woehrl, 6-4.

UCI (9-14) extended the advantage to 3-0 with commanding victories at No. 1 and No. 3 singles – both by identical 6-2, 6-2 scores – as Heim knocked off Albert and Lopez toppled Woehrl.

The Rainbow Warriors were competing at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, but any thought of a comeback was extinguished by Bajpai at No. 6 with his 7-5, 6-1 victory over Eric Kenneth.

The Anteaters will appear in their third straight tournament semifinals, as they will face top-seeded UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 3:00 p.m.  UH finishes its season at 2-15.
