The College Baseball Foundation released its 2017 initial watch lists for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the nation’s top shortstop, and National Pitcher of the Year Award and four Big West student-athletes were among those who were named.
UC Irvine’s Mikey Duarte and Cal State Fullerton’s Sahid Valenzuela were among the group of 75 talented athletes in Division I college baseball named to the 2017 Brooks Wallace Award Watch List. Both shortstops play a large part in their respective team's defenses that rank in the nation's top 20. The ‘Eaters currently sport a .983 fielding percentage to rank ninth in the nation, while the Titans rank 14th with a .981 clip.
Cal State Fullerton’s John Gavin and Long Beach State’s Darren McCaughan made the watch list for Pitcher of the Year Award. In 52.2 innings pitched, Gavin has allowed just 13 earned runs for a 2.22 earned run average, while holding his opposition to a 2.30 batting average. He currently ranks second in the Big West in wins with five.
McCaughan’s opponents are hitting a league-low 1.96 against him. In 65.2 inning tossed, the righty from Downey, Calif., owns a 2.88 ERA and has struck out 61 batters. He has also allowed just eight walks.
