2017 Track and Field Release No. 3

Cal Poly, UC Riverside and Hawai‘i host track and field meets this week.

BIG WEST AT A GLANCE

Host Meets On This Week’s Schedule: Three Big West schools are hosting track and field meets this week.  UC Riverside hosts the nine-team Spring Classic, which includes conference counterparts Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State and UC Irvine.  Cal Poly runs the ShareSLO Invitational with visiting teams Fresno State, CSU Bakersfield and Pepperdine in attendance.  Hawai‘i welcomes in four teams for the Rainbow Relays – Big West competitor CSUN, plus Sacramento State, Cal State Dominguez Hills and Hawai‘i Pacific.  UC Santa Barbara is the only school to hit the road, traveling south for the Aztec Invitational.

Jewett Leads Big West In Three Events: UC Irvine sophomore Isaiah Jewett is the Big West leader in three events – the 400m, 800m and 4x400 relay.  He beat his previous lifetime-best by 5.24 seconds to win last week’s UCI Spring Break Collegiate Classic, finishing the 800m in 1:49.14.  That mark was fifth-best in program history.  Jewett also clocked a lifetime-best 47.38 in the 400m two weeks ago at the Ben Brown Invitational.

CSUN Sprinters Impress At Home Meet: CSUN sprinters Marie Veale and Lexis Lambert, who both redshirted last season, are back for their senior campaigns.  The duo combined to post conference top marks in three events at last weekend’s Northridge Invite.  Veale won the 100m in a time of 11.67.  Meanwhile, Lambert swept both the 200m (23.72) and 400m (53.64).  Her time in the 400 was a personal-best.  Veale also finished second in the 200m .

Briggs Ties School Record In Long Jump: Sophomore Kemonie Briggs tied the Long Beach State school record with a first-place performance in the long jump at last Saturday’s USC Trojan Invitational.  Briggs equaled the distance of three-time All-American Willie Alexander, who initially set the record a season ago at 25-10.25.  Briggs hit that mark with a negative wind reading of -1.1, making it his first outdoor wind-legal mark above 25-feet.  He is No. 1 nationally in that event with that mark.

Grigoriev Improves On Personal-Best: UC Davis senior Alex Grigoriev impressed at the Hornet Invitational with the lone event win for the Aggies, in the 800 meters.  He finished in 1:49.31, more than a full second faster than his previous best of 1:50.33, set back in 2014.  Grigoriev now ranks No. 3 in school history with that performance.

Big West Track & Field Championship Comes To Cal State Fullerton: Cal State Fullerton will host the Big West Track and Field Championships for the first time since 1999.  The Titan Track Complex will be home to the multi-events portion of the meet (May 5-6) and the full portion (May 12-13).
