AROUND THE BIG WEST

SOFTBALL READY FOR ITS CLOSE UP
Several softball series have been selected a national audience across ESPN platforms. Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State will play the final game of their rivalry set on ESPNU, a matchup scheduled for 3 pm  on Sunday, April 30.

Softball will also make three appearance on ESPN3. First will be the series between Cal Poly and Cal State Fullerton April 8-9. UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State will then have the honors for their series April 22-23. CSUN and CSF will then wrap up the scheduled E3 softball package with their doubleheader on May 6.

THE HIT QUEEN
UC Santa Barbara senior Kristen Clark moved to the top of another Big West list last week. With a pair of hits against Loyola Marymount, Clark became the all-time hits leader for the Gauchos with 259. She also moved into a tie for seventh all-time in Big West history in the category. Clark also sports a career .387 batting average which is tops in UCSB history and seventh all-time in conference lore.

WHAT A WEEK
Cal Poly senior Sierra Hyland earned her third straight Pitcher of the Week honor after going 4-0, including two wins over #9 Oklahoma, last week but that wasn’t her lone accomplishment. Hyland’s 15th career Pitcher of the Week award ties her for the most in Big West history, while her 17 weekly citatons in the Big West is the most any Big West athlete has claimed in any sport. Hyland also claimed two national honors last week as she was named USA Softball Collegiate National Co-Player of the Week and the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Co-National Pitcher of the Week.

For good measure Hyland also struck out 40 last week, putting her in a tie atop the Big West career strikeout list with 846.

MUSTANGS ENTER THE RANKINGS
Cal Poly has won 15 of its 16 games in March on its way to a league-best 23-7 record. Included in that run was a pair of wins against #9 Oklahoma, the defending national champion. The Mustang efforts have been noticed nationally as the club is ranked #25 in the USA Today/NFCA Poll, the first time the team has been ranked since 2009. That year Cal Poly reached as high as #21 on its way to a Big West title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

REACHING FOR HISTORY
Among the many top 10 career Big West lists that CSUN senior Taylor Golver is on, the most impressive may be batting average. Glover is third all-time with a .398 batting average, within reach of becoming just the third player in league history to post a .400 career batting average. Glover is currently batting .427 and ended a year ago at .429, putting her in a solid position for the feat.

POWERBALL
A year ago, Hawai’i didn’t rely too much on the long ball as the lineup produced 25 home runs in 54 games. This year the ball has been flying out of the yard for the ‘Bows as they have registered 25 home runs in 31 games. They are second in the Big West in homers and have left the yard three times in their last four games after going five straight without a dinger.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME
The Long Beach State pitching staff has put up some extreme win/loss splits so far this season. The Beach sports a 1.95 ERA with 40 strikeouts, 61 hits and 30 walks in its their 11 wins, while recording a 6.52 ERA, 49 strikeouts, 67 walks and 144 hits in its 16 losses.
