McCann, Melounova Earn Tennis Weekly Awards

Kyle McCann of UC Riverside and Petra Melounova of Hawai‘i were the top tennis performers for the Big West as the weekly honors were announced.

McCann Goes 4-0 In Two Highlander Wins

UC Riverside sophomore Kyle McCann (San Jose, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) earned Big West Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honors after winning a combined four matches and helping the Highlanders to a pair of victories.

McCann helped guide the Highlanders to wins over Whittier (7-0) and Western New Mexico (5-2).  He won both of his No. 2 singles matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-3 rout of Whittier’s Thomas Koszowski.

At No. 3 doubles, McCann teamed with Max Cohen to win twice.  They eked out a tough battle with WNM’s Blayze O’Keefe and Zachary Grabovic, prevailing 7-5.

Melounova Continues To Roll

Hawai‘i freshman Petra Melounova (Havlickuv Brod, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Havlickuv Brod) collected her second Big West Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week honor this season as she helped the ‘Bows extend their win streak to six straight.

Melounova won her No. 2 singles match against Long Beach State’s Julie Gerard, 6-1, 6-2, providing a crucial point in a 4-3 victory.  The ‘Bows took over sole possession of first place in the Big West at 3-0. 

She also won a 7-5, 6-3 contest over BYU’s Savannah Ware-Avina to help UH record a 5-2 triumph.  She has won six of her last seven singles matches with one going unfinished.

At No. 1 doubles, she and partner Roxanne Resma went 2-0, including a 6-4 win over LBSU’s Gerard and Maeva Razakasoa that clinched the doubles point.
