Seeding Up For Grabs Entering Final Week

2/28/2017

Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 17

alt

The final week of the regular season will be a vital one as all eight positions in the Big West Tournament are up for grabs. CSUN, winners of nine in a row, has the toughest slate as it will visit Long Beach State before hosting league-leading UC Davis.

AROUND THE BIG WEST

IF THE TOURNEY STARTED TODAY
With the Big West Tournament starting in a week, its not too early to check the matchups if the tourney began today. The first round would feature a rematch of last year as #5 UC Santa Barbara takes on #8 UC Irvine, while #6 Cal Poly would be matched up against defending Tournament champion #7 Hawai’i. The #3 seed would be CSUN and the #4 would be UC Riverside. Long Beach State would be #2 and the top seed would be UC Davis.

RARE FEAT
CSUN sophomore center Channon Fluker’s scoring, rebounding and blocks binge has her on the verge of one of the Big West’s most impressive stat lines. She currently is tied for the lead in scoring (17.2) and leads the league in rebounding (11.6) and blocks (2.5). The only player to  lead the league in all three categories was Cal State Fullerton great Genia Miller, who averaged 29.4 points, 12.3 rebounds and 4.4 blocks in the 1990-91 season.

STREAKING TO THE FINISH
CSUN and UC Davis enter the final weekend on a high note thanks to their respective win streaks. The Matadors have won nine a row, its longest string since winning the same number in a row at the end of the 2014-15 season. The Aggies have upped their win streak to eight, the longest in the program’s DI era and the most since 2006. UCD’s streak has also pushed it to 20 wins for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign.

WHO WOKE UP IRENE?
UC Irvine senior Irene Chavez has been scorching the floor over her past four games, averaging 17.8 points while shooting 56.6% (22-39) from the floor, 93.8% (15-16) from the foul line and 52.2% (12-23) from three-point land. Chavez has been even better over the last two games, recording back-to-back 20-point outings and 10 threes in 17 attempts.

RECORD CHASING
Cal Poly junior Dynn Leaupepe still leads the Big West with a free throw percentage of 91.2, the lone player in the league over 80% among qualified players. Leaupepe’s percentage would also be a Big West record, topping the previous high of 90.1% by Selena Ho of former member Pacific back in the 2000-01 season. Leaupepe would also join Ho as the only players in Big West history to shoot 90% or better from the foul line in a single season.

COACHING MILESTONES
Three coaches have a chance to reach a milestone in the final weeks of the season. Cal Poly’s Faith Mimnaugh (274) is three wins away from second place on the league’s all-time chart. UC Riverside’s John Margaritis is just one win away from becoming the fourth coach in league history with 200 career victories. Finally UC Davis’ Jennifer Gross is one win away from 100 in her career, which would make her the 14th coach in Big West history to reach that number.

GRAND STATUS
UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud, Cal Poly senior Hannah Gilbert and Long Beach State senior Anna Kim became the 130th, 131st and 132nd members of the Big West 1,000-point club this season.

#NUMBERS ARE COOL

3 - Consecutive 20-win seasons by Long Beach State

4 - Three-pointers needed by UCI's Andee Ritter to tie for 10th on the single season Big West list

4.4 - Assist average of UCI's Brooke Bayman and UCD's Kourtney Eaton, tops in the Big West

12 - Consecutive double-figure scoring games by CSUN's Serafina Maulupe
