Three Weeks To Go...UCD And LBSU Still On Top

Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 15

With three weeks to go in the regular season, UC Davis (9-2) and Long Beach State (8-2) continue to lead the pack. The 49ers do have an enormous edge as they have previously beaten the Aggies on two occasions. LBSU visits Cal Poly and hosts surging UC Santa Barbara in an ESPN3 matchup this week, while the Aggies have a single game on the docket...a road contest against Hawai'i.

Big West student-athletes aren't only passionate when it comes to performing on the field or in the classroom, but also when it comes to the community. The Big West Conference will host #Play4Kay games this winter to support Breast Cancer Awareness. Check out one of the following games for a chance to receive a #BigWestCares wristbands featured below!

2/18 Cal Poly Women's Basketball
2/18 Long Beach State Women's Basketball
2/23 UC Irvine Women's Basketball

UC Santa Barbara has a chance to get a leg up on the final push for the regular season title over the next 11 days. The Gauchos, who are tied for third at 7-4, have road matchups against the upper tier in UC Riverside, Long Beach State and UC Davis UCSB has performed well against the trio in the first matchups this season, going 2-1 with the wins against UC Riverside and Long Beach State coming in back-to-back games.

UC Irvine sophomore Andee Ritter knocked down four threes against Cal Poly last week, giving her 66 for the season and setting a new single season ‘Eater record. Her 65th trey was the record breaker, topping the 64 that former great Kathy Lizarraga hit back in 1988-89. Ritter is also just the third UCI player to ever hit 60 threes in a season, joining Lizarrage and Wendy Gabbe (2002-03). With six regular season games remaining and 70 threes on the season, Ritter has a chance to crack the Big West single season list as 10th place belongs to former UC Riverside great Brittany Crain with 83.

Four coaches in the Big West are on the verge of career milestones this season. Cal Poly’s Faith Mimnaugh has 273 career wins, three shy of second place all-time. UC Riverside’s John Margaritis needs just three more wins to become the fourth coach ever to reach 200 in league history. Meanwhile CSUN’s Jason Flowers and UC Davis’ Jennifer Gross are approaching 100 career wins with 98 and 96, respectively.

Last week against UC Irvine, Cal Poly registered three 20-point scorers in juniors Dynn (21) and Lynn (20) Leaupepe as well as senior Hannah Gilbert (20). That marked the first time in the Mustangs’ DI history that a trio of players reached 20 points in the same game.

CSUN and UC Davis are on five-game win streaks, matching the best in the league this year with Long Beach State. CSUN is the only one of the trio that has a chance to extend the streak at home as LBSU had its run snapped on the road and UCD will be away from home this week.

Long Beach State had a record-breaking day in its win over Cal State Fullerton last week. The 49ers tied a team and Big West record with 20 makes from beyond the arc, as well as setting a program and conference record with 45 three-point attempts. The performance came 13 months to the day of LBSU hitting 20 threes against Fullerton last season. In addition, junior Jessica Gertz set a single game 49er record with nine threes in the game.

UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud, Cal Poly senior Hannah Gilbert and Long Beach State senior Anna Kim became the 130th, 131st and 132nd members of the Big West 1,000-point club this season.

UC Riverside senior Réjane Vérin (956) is moving closer to the milestone as she put up 544 points last year, her first with UCR after transferring from UNLV.

2 - Number of 20-rebound games by a player in the Big West this season. Both by CSUN's Channon Fluker.

6 - NUmber of consecutive double-doubles by Fluker

11 - Consecutive free throws made by Cal Poly's Dynn Leaupepe over her last three games.

18 - Wins by UC Davis, just one shy of its total from 2015-16.

90 - Free throws made by Sarah Toeaina of Hawai'i, tops in the Big West.
