The New Year Brings Final Tuneup For Conference Play

Big West Women's Basketball Weekly Release No. 8

As the last week of 2016 is upon us, the women's hoops teams return from extended breaks for their final tuneups prior to conference play. UC Davis owns the league's top mark at 8-3, while preseason favorite Long Beach State stands right behind the Aggies at 8-6.

Long Beach State head coach Jody Wynn and CSUN head coach Jason Flowers have competed in the Play4Kay Free Throw Challenge. Each made free throw is a $4 donation to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Each coach will also challenge their colleagues to do the same. To see their videos, click on the links below.

UC Santa Barbara picked up a pair of victories at the Battle on the Border in Edinburg, Texas, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and North Dakota State. Junior forward Drew Edelman earned All-Tournament team honors after averaging 14.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists over the two games. The two wins also pushed UCSB’s winning streak to a season-high three.

UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud has been on a tear as the Highlanders approach conference play. The guard is averaging 22.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals and is shooting 40.9% from deep (9-22) over her last three games. In UCR’s overtime road loss to Kansas, DeCoud poured in a career-high 29 points, tied a career-best with five three pointers made and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds.

CSUN sophomore center Channon Fluker has been a double-double machine of late, picking up three of them in as many games. Fluker’s run began on the road with a 32-point, 19-rebound effort against Weber State and a 14-point, 13-rebound showing against Saint Mary’s. Her return home against Southern Utah resulted in a 24-point, 12-rebound stat line. Fluker has been efficient in those three contests, averaging 28 minutes per contest.

The Cal Poly trio of senior Hannah Gilbert and juniors Dynn and Lynn Leaupepe is one of the most lethal combos in the league. Gilbert is averaging 13.7 points, 7.2 rebounds and shooting 50% from the field and 73.9% from the free throw line. Dynn Leaupepe is averaging 13.9 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.2 steals and is shooting 90.7% from the charity stripe. Lynn Leaupepe is putting up 13.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 steals and is shooting 73.9% from the foul line. They are also the only trio of teammates to rank in the top 10 in scoring in the Big West.

UC Irvine junior forward Sabrina Engelstad has upped her scoring output of late, having scored in double digits in the points column in 10 of her last 11 contests. The transfer from Saint Mary’s scored a season-high 18 points on two occasions over that span, and has upped her scoring average to 11.4 points for the season.

Long Beach State has been one of the most aggressive teams in the country beyond the arc and at the stripe. The 49ers lead the league in three pointers made per game (8.6), total three pointers (120), free throws made (170) and free throw attempts (272). The club also ranks ninth in the country in threes made and 17th in free throw attempts.

UC Riverside senior Simone DeCoud became the 130th member of the Big West 1,000-point club this season, reaching the milestone in a home win over Grand Canyon.

Three more players could join DeCoud as Long Beach State senior Anna Kim (903) and Cal Poly senior Hannah Gilbert (891) should reach the list by season’s end. A player to keep an eye on is UC Riverside senior Réjane  Verin (713) as she put up 544 points last year, her first with UCR after transferring from UNLV.
